Bad Breath with acid reflux?

By luannroberts Tuesday, November 27, 2007

I'm curious...my husband is having a flare up and he has bad breath..not all the time. Is this something that can be part of the acid reflux problem?? It's not just bad breath..it is a really foul smell!!

Hi Luann,

While I didn't find anything that specifically relates bad breath with acid reflux, I did find a couple postings you might want to read. One is a similar question to yours that was answered by Todd Eisner the resident professional on this board. In this posting by rjneely the question is posed about hiatal hernia and one of the symptoms being bad breath. Dr Eisner answers this inquiry in the comments section of that posting.

There is also a suggestion with respect to children, that bad breath might be an issue as GERD tends to cause dental problems as a result of the acid, which can also lead to bad breath. You can read more from the Pediatric Adolescent Gastroesophageal Reflux Assocation here.

Good luck and please stay in touch and let us know how your husband (and you) are doing.

Thanks!

Vicki M

Hi Vicki M

Thanks for responding to my question.

My husband goes back to the Doc next Wed. I called and told them ALL of the problems he is having...that way he won't forget to tell them something!!! Big Grin They wrote it down to give to the doc!

Have you ever heard of Gaviscon?? He has been taking that along with his Nexium seems to have calmed it down a little more.

Plus I am trying to cook things that's easier on his stomach.
