For everyone out there who has acid reflux, you probably have a pretty conscious understanding of what you put into your mouth everyday. You know what will cause you to burp and bloat or to just to feel uncomfortable. I've grown up with reflux but when I started college a few months ago, I became independent in just about every aspect of my life, especially when and what I eat.
On Friday night, a slice of pizza might sound good to the taste buds but you're probably also thinking about what'll be the result of this indulgence. Buried under the cheese, crust, and sauce are hundreds of calories high in fat and definitely in acid. Tomato sauce is one of those classic foods on the ‘do not eat' list for refluxers because of its high acid content. The high fat content of pizza causes it to sit longer in your stomach, making more acid production, followed by those feelings of regret once we start to feel its effects.
This is by no means to say that you'll never eat pizza again. The key is simple-moderation. After all, it probably wouldn't end well if anyone ate an entire pizza themselves, much less a refluxer. My reflux has been in control for many years now so when I do decide to eat things like pizza or to grab a cup of coffee on the way to class, I am fully prepared with the antacids if it becomes a problem. I often make decisions too, where I won't allow myself more than one cup of coffee or a slice of pizza per meal so I don't overdo it on my body. I figured out the dos and don'ts on my own and sometimes I'd just have to sit out on eating something that all of my friends could without thinking twice. It took some time for me to play around with different foods to find out what I could handle to digest and it's something that everybody will be different with. For those days that I don't want to risk symptoms flaring up, there are endless options for foods that are less threatening.
For me personally, it's the liquids that elicit the worst symptoms. Soda and other carbonated drinks have been out of the picture for as long as I can remember. On those special occasions growing up, I'd be limited to one glass and even that was enough for me to be able to burp the ABC's. I just got used to drinking water all together which is a great health benefit in itself.
