This news comes from the Associated Press:

Drug maker Wyeth Pharmaceuticals said Thursday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new oral alternative of its heartburn drug Protonix for adults.

The oral delayed-release version joins Wyeth's FDA-approved Protonix products, which include delayed-release tablets and IV for injection.

The company said the new Protonix treats acid comparably to its Protonix tablets.

The side effect profile for the new product is similar to the safety profile of the delayed-release tablets. The most common side effects were headache, diarrhea and flatulence.

Wyeth's press release says that the oral suspension can be administered orally in applesauce or apple juice or through a nasogastric (NG) tube.

The acid reflux drug is for people who have trouble swallowing the tablets.
