Just wondering if any other parents of gerdlings have the same issue i have.
Every time we sit down to eat, my son(Jax-6months)seems so darn happy and he progressively starts getting fussier as we are eating. By the time we are at the end of his meal he is very upset. Is this part of the GERD or should i be looking into something else? Does anyone else have this issue?
Thanks,
Jaxmommy

Hello!
I hope some other parents will share their feeding stories too. I hear about fussiness and crying during and after feedings all the time. I think it is common when a child is in pain from reflux.
I know you are trying to increase his weight so it might be unrealistic to decrease the amount of each feeding and give him an extra feeding during the day. Some parents tell me this amounts to finishing one feeding and then starting the process all over again. However, he might be fussing to signal that he is getting full and his stomach is beginning to hurt. Taking a break, burping and holding upright might help. Some parents use a feeding wedge to increase the angle for feeding so the baby is more upright. I know Pollywog baby has a feeding wedge and there are others out there too.
From your previous posts, I know you have recently changed his formula and the medication. How is he doing on the new medication?

We have been on prevacid now for about 3 weeks, he is doing better, although when we started the new meds we overlaped with the zantac so give the prevacid a chance to kick in and start working. He was much happier when he was taking both, our pedi said she doesn't want him on both so we did get him weened off the zantac. Now he is just a happy spitter, he doesn't feel as much pain (that we can tell) but since getting him on just one med he has started spitting up again. Any insites on this?
We are currently eatting stage 1 baby food and oatmeal, along with the formula, he tyoical follows this meu:
Wake up
Oatmeal and 8oz formula
play, nap
Fruit or veggie and 4-6oz formula
play, nap
Oatmeal and 6-8oz formaula
play, play
7pm - 7:30pm Dinner
Fruit or veggie(which ever he didn't have earlier that day) and 4-8oz formula.
8-8:30 falls asleep for the night doesn't wake until around 9 am the folloeing morning.
We got lucky with the sleep pattern!
Thanks again,
Jaxmommy

Hello!
Thanks for sharing the feeding and sleep schedule. Wow-lucky indeed with is sleep pattern! It is great that he will sleep for such a long stretch. Maybe he is having a hard time fitting all of those meals in before that long stretch of sleep at night.A full tummy needs to stretch and this can cause some discomfort.
I wonder what would happen if you stopped offering the bottle when the fussing started. Maybe take a break and come back to it in a few minutes? Or maybe he is just full?
Sometimes the doctor will recommend adding a thickener to the feeds too-a thickener may reduce vomiting and help keep the liquid from backwashing and causing irritation.
Back to your original question...it isn't "normal" for a baby to fuss and fret while eating. While some babies with reflux seem to be in distress while eating, the goal of treatment is to reduce or eliminate pain so keep your doctor in the loop about your concerns too.
Take care,
Jan
