infant with GERD

By Dawne Sunday, September 14, 2008

My son is 8weeks old and has had bad reflux and regurgitation since he was born. I am unable to lie him down to sleep so he sleeps on my chest sitting up.  We tried zantac with no success.  We have added rice to his formula with the pediatricians ok of course with has reduced the incidence of regurg but not completely.  He was started on prevacid 7.5mg 2 weeks ago which does not seem to be helping.  I know it is not a weight based medicine but can it be increased to 15mg?  He weighs 12lbs 4oz.  Also what can I do to reduce his regurg so he can lay down to sleep and just be more comfortable in general.

Hello Dawne,

It sounds like your doctor has a great deal of experience with reflux. It is a good idea to try one treatment at a time and see if there is a decrease in symptoms. I know it is hard to wait between treatments and see if there is improvement. Remember the goal of treatment is to improve quality of life and reduce pain and discomfort. You and the doctor may not be able to completely eliminate the spit up and vomiting.

I hope you have frequent check ups with the doctor to monitor weight and reflux symptoms. At that time, the treatments may be adjusted, including increasing or changing the medication if needed.

Let us know how you are doing and give us an update on your little baby when you get a chance.

Best wishes,

Jan Gambino

Hi - My daughter had that problem and her pediatrician, way ahead of his time, told me she was probably allergic to something in my milk (as I was nursing her). That led to me curtailing cow's milk in every form and a few other odd items, like mushrooms, which seemed to effect her. You could consider whether changing your son's diet would make a difference. A second option I can suggest, now that my daughter is 23 years old!) is to see if there are any chiropractor's experienced in this problem. We now live in Denmark and here, the chiropractor is the first expert parent's visit when their babies are having gerd and/or extreme sleep problems. I would just use the Internet first to run searches using words like 'chiropractic' and 'treatment' and GERD and possibly 'infants' first, to see what you can learn before speaking with a chiropractor - to ensure you are connecting with someone experienced in this area of the trade. Good luck! And hang in there! You will get through this!
