has anyone ever coughed up a little blood when reflux symtoms were acting up

sandra Community Member December 03, 2007
  • I'm new here so please bear with me, as I have a long story.

I have acid reflex and all the accompanying symptoms on and off for quite some time now, for weeks and months at a time. Constant belching, regurgitation of food, upper stomach discomfort, sometimes a bit of nausea, congestion, post nasal drip and liguid running down (or up?) into my throat, in my bronchial tubes and respiartory track, dry cough...and occasionally even a kind of wheezing or rumbling in upper abdomen and chest, gas...and when it gets really bad I also get  pain across rib area, upper back and even neck pain. I'm contantly clearing my throat and I get a burning sensation in upper stomach and behind breastbone throat sometimes (when I'm eating). All these symtoms overlap and some come and go in between, severe or not severe depending on ??... Most frustrating is that I can never tell what it is that triggers these episodes to start so suddenly and/or why and what makes them go away for weeks or months either? I can't discern which is the first "source" symtom that comes and/or maybe then causes the next one! I was feeling great with no symtoms for 2 months due to a very strict diet including a regime of taking enzymes aloe, licorice, marshmallow tinture etc 2 times a day with meals, perscribed by my nutritionist/kineisiologist. But now after over 2 months of perfect health something triggered it again and I can't figure it out?  I've been very diligent in doing everything she advises me to do, and I follow up. She says that I have a yeast producing issue and weakness in liver function and metabolizing sugars etc. But that it's not serious. I am normally a very health orientated anyway and even before I was on this diet I was pretty much eating a basically healthy diet. I never drank coffee or any caffeine drinks or soda, and very little juice. I dring lots of water, take supplements etc, etc. don't eat junk foods except for an occasional chessburger, pasta or desert once in a while. I now cut it all out and don't eat any dairy...am off all sugar, yeast, soy, enriched breads and pasta.  I am 55 and around 125 lbs I don't smoke...I haven't had even one cocktail for 3 months. Maybe the food she has me on is just wrong for long term? (Broiled, grilled meat, fish poultry, steamed veggies only olive oil, brown rice . No fruit, raw foods (salads) bla, bla)...Anyway I'm at my wits end! I'm so dissappointed, because i thought i had this under control. I've spent a fortune on treatments etc. As well as body work for my back issues (that supposedly contribute to my digestive issues due to my misaligned spine connecting to nerves of he vital organs and digestive system bla, bla). Sometimes it all just goes away (for a week or two or more if i'm lucky) and as quick as it comes it goes! I'm thinking that maybe have some kind of bacteria that neve really goes away but just calms down for a while with certain combinations of food? Maybe it needs to be treated with antibiotics?  I've been told by a couple other holistic practitioners/kineisiologists that candida and a funcus can cause this too? The most disturbing and frightening symptom I had a couple of times (last year was the first time and a few times since) and now again that prompted me to seek out some feedback here is that...a couple of times when I had that feeling of congestion and liquid in my bronchial area (when the acid reflux had been going on too) I cleared my throat to loosen it and I had a blood taste. I tried to cough and then spit to see if it was and and I brought up a little bright red blood. I was a wreck. I tried to cough more to see if it continued but it stopped after a few drops and even if I tried to cough more it was just clear saliva after the first intial coughs.  Then it just went away. This happened a few times, again when I also had all the other acid reflux symtoms. Has anyone else with acid reflux ever had this happen. Can acid reflux irritate the bronchial track or throat enough to cause bleeding? Can I have an on going respiratory infection?

  • A while ago a doctor (friend) told me that it was reflux abut i hadn't had the coughuing blood at the time yet. She gave me nexium for my refluxand also flonase for my post nasal drip which she thinks may be aggravating the reflux...However I will not take drugs and only want to use a holistic approach...unless of course antibiotics are the only way.  to make matters worse I'm a singer so its even a bigger issue and disrupts my life even further by affecting my vocal health. does anyone have any advise or similar issues? Thank you so much for reading this very long saga!

    Hi Sandra!

I spent some time looking for information for you. In our Acid Reflux resource section, under complications, it does say that bleeding is common in cases of erosive esophogitis. You can read more about that here. You should always tell your doctor about any symptoms whether you believe they are related or not. It makes sense that acid reflux irritates everything (especially the sufferer!!) and if you irritate something as soft as the esophagus you will experience bleeding.

I hope this helps a little. As always only a Doctor can diagnose and treat, so see your physician often. Please stay in touch with us and let us know how you are doing!!

I am feeling much better but needless to say I am still going to see a doctor (of alternative medicine)  whowas recomended. I'm hoping to find permanent relief from this awful condition with the right diet and natural treatment.

      Vickie,

You wrote exactly to a "T" what I have been experiencing. However I have one question for you.

Have you had your Thyroid checked and if so are you on Synthroid or did you have T 131 treatment? Send me the answer and I will follow up with you.

You don't understand the damage you are doing by letting these episodes keep on happening. Does the word "cancer" enter your mind ever when they are going on? That's what continuing reflux can do to you. Girlfriend, take the Nexium!!! It's not a perfect fix but if it works for you as it did for me, your tummy will be so much better. Why oh why, would you put yourself through it constantly when there is an easy fix. Medicine is responsible for keeping us alive longer and feeling so much better then other generations. Holistic medicine is something you look into when it first starts, whatever it is, but chances are it won't help much if at all. Get the Nexium!! I was just like you but not anymore..... Good luck.

Get an herbalist to make lomatium herbal tincture for you to take daily. Rinsed my nose with hydro grossan nasal irrigator with water and salt daily - and after the rinse, put antifungal cream into nose (maybe uncomfortable) miconazole nitrate cream or daktarin for 3 days in a row. Your sinus problems and post nasal drip could be fungal and could be due to pinched nerves because of spinal misalignment. I tried traditional chiropractors to no avail until I found NUCCA chiropractic care... it worked for me.

I have acid reflux for 5 years nightly now.  I usually just swallow it and take Zantac 75 but last night I spit it into the bathroom sink and it did have signs of blood.  That scared me lots. That's why I have looked up acid reflux with blood here.   I have peripheral neuropathy also so I limit drinking alcohol to once a month or so (for fun).  I am sure that alcohol aggravates the acid reflux also, but Zantac 75 works fine.  It does not affect your system like Prilosec or Nexus and therefore I think it is safer??  Sometimes, if I eat a lot of meat (beef, poultry, etc), I have to take a 2nd Zantac 75 around 2 a.m. Anyway, I am 67 and young for my age in appearance and most other ways.  A new recent symptom of ?? is an electrical feeling that goes through my body or my arm.  It has happened 3 times now in the past few months (twice whole body, last was just my arm) so it has scared me too.  My mother died of heart attack and stroke at 69 so I am more aware of how I feel lately.  I am not a hypocondriac and do not visit doctors often.  I do not trust what doctors say about most things.  I prefer the young, new doctors because they are not jaded, and will tell you what they think.  Unfortunately, they do not have much experience.  I am very wary of pharmaceutical remedies in general.  Any suggestions?  Any gut feelings or comments?? Thanks.

My observations: i have less/no reflux if i:- -eat smaller meals n  less fat.  eg fat free milk, no creamy or oily foods or sugary stuff or ketchup.

    -eat alcaline foods.

-don't drink liquid close to meals i.e. before or after.

-exercise is also important as my food digests faster.

I once tried ayurvedic medication from india & it helped.  My symptoms disappeared for a long time.

I guess it's basically a new lifestyle that needs to be adopted. - healthy n happy ;)

I suggest find a good gastrologist n check if you need a gastroscopy too... just to play safe.

Thanks everyone for the posts and sharing your insights! I hope this finds well and that you are all experiencing greater Health at this time!

I haven't experienced any of these symptoms in a very, very long time. I rarely have digestive issues anymore at all, and/or the other symptoms associated.

Almost, a year ago I began having some "minor" and very temporary upper digestive discomfort again but by no means not anything as severe as previous issues. And I nipped it in the bud!

I chose to see a Homeopath. She is an extremely dedicated practitioner, from Russia and trained in Bio Resonance Energy Testing. Which actually provides a clear view on screen about what might be going on in one's body; Where there is inflamation, disfunction, under or over activity of particular bodily systems, organs, glands etc. Since I am familiar with, feel most comfortable with holistic approaches and very much intuitively tuned to my own body it actually turned out that the testing proved to confirm much of what I had been feeling might be the sources, issues and was indeed quite accurate.

Most importantly Bio Resonance testing can reveal which treatments, foods, supplements, vitamins are most resonant, effective (and/or discordant) with one's own "Individual" Physical body functioning as well as one's Energetic System.

I now follow a Individualized Protocol recommended by my practitioner. I'm on a limited diet, focusing on the foods that are highly beneficial for my individual requirement and body system and taking Homepathic remedies. I have quarterly re-testing with change of seasons and for particular foods in seasons (as this affects our bodies too, and foods, treatments, exercise, etc we may or may not require at a particular time of year). Our bodies also go through different cycles and experience various changes in accordance to weather, atmosphereic changes, age, hormonal, stress factors, and lifestyle changes etc and the list goes on...

This hold true especially in my case. As I am an Intuitive/Empath, Extremely Earth Sensitive and I myself also work with Energetic Healing Techniques. Therefore, this type treatment has proved to be Extremely compatible with my lifestyle, and also in congruence with my Spiritual Beliefs, Practices as well.

In addition the Homeopathic Protocal prescribed by my practitioner, I also continue my own daily AM/PM Healing Meditations and Treatments, Practices which have also proven to contribute to my further improvement and Overall Health and Well Being.

However this has been "my" own experience. I understand that everyone must do what one feels is best with them. Therefore...Take only what resonates here. Learn to listen to "your own" Body's Inner Wisdom, and then Discern carefully through your own Innate Intuition what is best for "you".

      Be Happy...Be Healthy...Live Well!

      In Gratitude,

      Sandra
