has anyone ever coughed up a little blood when reflux symtoms were acting up

A while ago a doctor (friend) told me that it was reflux abut i hadn't had the coughuing blood at the time yet. She gave me nexium for my refluxand also flonase for my post nasal drip which she thinks may be aggravating the reflux...However I will not take drugs and only want to use a holistic approach...unless of course antibiotics are the only way. to make matters worse I'm a singer so its even a bigger issue and disrupts my life even further by affecting my vocal health. does anyone have any advise or similar issues? Thank you so much for reading this very long saga!

Hi Sandra!

I spent some time looking for information for you. In our Acid Reflux resource section, under complications, it does say that bleeding is common in cases of erosive esophogitis. You can read more about that here. You should always tell your doctor about any symptoms whether you believe they are related or not. It makes sense that acid reflux irritates everything (especially the sufferer!!) and if you irritate something as soft as the esophagus you will experience bleeding.

It has helped to ease my mind. In addition today a friend of mine came by and brought his friend who happens to have reflux too. she is better now but she too had some spitting up of blood during her bouts. She said her voice was often very hoarse from it too. I am feeling much better but needless to say I am still going to see a doctor (of alternative medicine) whowas recomended. I'm hoping to find permanent relief from this awful condition with the right diet and natural treatment.

I have had a similar experience of coughing up a little blood & my symptoms come n go like yours. I'm not sure why either.

My observations: i have less/no reflux if i:- -eat smaller meals n less fat. eg fat free milk, no creamy or oily foods or sugary stuff or ketchup.

-eat alcaline foods.

-don't drink liquid close to meals i.e. before or after.

-exercise is also important as my food digests faster.

I once tried ayurvedic medication from india & it helped. My symptoms disappeared for a long time.

I guess it's basically a new lifestyle that needs to be adopted. - healthy n happy ;)

I suggest find a good gastrologist n check if you need a gastroscopy too... just to play safe.

I too have same problem like you. I have acid reflex since six months and two days back i found little blood while clearing my throat, got scared and looked for similar messages. i am going to see ENT next weeks and keeping my fingers crossed. after finding that u all have similar problem, i am bit relived.

Thanks, Sam...Yes it is very scary to see blood. I also felt relived when I heard others experienced the same symtoms. Luckily, my reflux seemed to have calmed down (almost a week now)...So I guess whatever gets irritated heals up, because the bleeding stopped again too. Good luck with the ENT guy! I also considered that it might be nasal related, pallops etc, etc. I'm curious as to what he will diagnose. I myself am disillusioned with the medical profession in general. Feel better and thanks again!

I have had it for 3 years...have taken Nexium, Xantac, but have been told by my doctor that too much can do liver damage...i wanted to try natural medicine..researched and found a product which I have been taking for 1 and 1/2 years with tremendous success...a natural fuit blend....when you first take it, you need to take it with some food because my stomach would burn at first...once my inflamation subsided, I could take it alone....I slowly increased the type of foods which I like to eat and so far, so good....I am a little scared to introduce chili peppers or pepper or tabasco in my food but I can live without those food as long as the acid reflux doesn't return......I don't think that I can mention the name of the product but if you google natural fruit remedies, you can find a few.....good luck hunting!!!!

Six times since last summer, I have had blood in my spit, almost always right after I have taken a drink of diet soda. Once, I had acid indigestion BAD while eating chicken parmesan as it burned all the way down. I am going to stop with any cabonated bevs as I believe I have irritated my esophagus. I do have a little pain where the eso joins the stomach. I went to the doc and am having blood tests. Pray all is well, please.

I had the same problem. This is what I did. Try NUCCA chiropractor for spinal alignment and go on an Anti-Candida diet: no wheat, no gluten, no dairy, no sugar, no refined white flour products for a while until I got better. Get an herbalist to make lomatium herbal tincture for you to take daily. Rinsed my nose with hydro grossan nasal irrigator with water and salt daily - and after the rinse, put antifungal cream into nose (maybe uncomfortable) miconazole nitrate cream or daktarin for 3 days in a row. Your sinus problems and post nasal drip could be fungal and could be due to pinched nerves because of spinal misalignment. I tried traditional chiropractors to no avail until I found NUCCA chiropractic care... it worked for me.

I am also suffering from same problem, Can i drink alcohol occasionaly?

Its really bad if in the weekend all your friends are boozing and you are sitting idle watching them :(

I have acid reflux for 5 years nightly now. I usually just swallow it and take Zantac 75 but last night I spit it into the bathroom sink and it did have signs of blood. That scared me lots. That's why I have looked up acid reflux with blood here. I have peripheral neuropathy also so I limit drinking alcohol to once a month or so (for fun). I am sure that alcohol aggravates the acid reflux also, but Zantac 75 works fine. It does not affect your system like Prilosec or Nexus and therefore I think it is safer?? Sometimes, if I eat a lot of meat (beef, poultry, etc), I have to take a 2nd Zantac 75 around 2 a.m. Anyway, I am 67 and young for my age in appearance and most other ways. A new recent symptom of ?? is an electrical feeling that goes through my body or my arm. It has happened 3 times now in the past few months (twice whole body, last was just my arm) so it has scared me too. My mother died of heart attack and stroke at 69 so I am more aware of how I feel lately. I am not a hypocondriac and do not visit doctors often. I do not trust what doctors say about most things. I prefer the young, new doctors because they are not jaded, and will tell you what they think. Unfortunately, they do not have much experience. I am very wary of pharmaceutical remedies in general. Any suggestions? Any gut feelings or comments?? Thanks.
