Acid Reflux + Lump In throat

By bob Monday, June 28, 2010

I would really like some help or advise regarding a problem that I have had for the past two months. I was diagonised with having a small hiatus hernia with acid reflux symptoms two years ago. I currently 31 week pregnant and I am having a terrible time with having a lump in my throat, which when I swallow just returns the same. It is worse after food and water and feels sticky at the back of my throat. When I try I can cough up a sticky white saliva. It make me very anxious as I feel I can not breathe and I start to have panic attacks. Because I am pregnant the Doctor can only give me Omeprazole 10mg which is working for my acid but not the lump in my throat. I really need help with my problem - i feel that I can not go on anymore.

Hello!

Reflux symptoms are common during pregnancy. The reality is, your baby is taking up the already limited space in your mid-section so your stomach doesn't have much capacity.  Certainly with a history of reflux and hiatial hernia, it is not surprising that you are having symptoms, especially this far into your pregnancy.

The primary care doctor or your gastroenterologist need to look at the treatment options for the remaining weeks of your pregnancy. It sounds like the medication is reducing the pain and discomfort from the acid. Not sure about why you are having so much mucous. I wonder if there is any concern about thrush or bacterial overgrowth? lactose intolerance? I am just giving you ideas for topics to discuss with the doctor.

In general, it is very important to eat small meals, chew well, sip your liquids throughout the day, never get your stomach too full and avoid eating before a nap or at night. Elevating the head may help for sleeping. Avoid movement or exercise right after a meal.

You should be eating a highly nutritious diet right now. I wonder if a nutritional drink may be a good option too. Again, something to discuss with the doctor. A nutritional drink is easier to digest and offers balanced nutrition. It may allow your digestive system to rest at least a bit.

Let us know what you find out from the doctor. There are many other moms to be here on HealthCentral with reflux so join the conversation. I have heard others talking about too much mucous in the throat too. Let all share our ideas and solutions.

Best wishes,

Jan

P.S. Of course send a picture of the baby too!
