8 month old still waking every 2 hours with reflux

By kjs5609 Monday, January 18, 2010

My son was diagnosed with reflux when he was 2 months old. He was on Zantac and alimentum formula. He was doing fine up until 5 months. The doctors told us to stop his meds at 4 months since he seemed to be doing fine. We also switched to Similac Sensitive formula. Then around 5 months he stopped sleep through the night. I assumed it was his teeth. Which I do think he was teething they finally popped through at 7 1/2 months. Around thanksgiving he started refluxing again. He is the silent relfuxer he will swallow it back down. They increased his meds again. And I also think he has a sensitivity to milk. So now I have switched back to alimentum slowly since my son does not really like it. He is still not sleeping. He wakes up screaming at least every two hours every night. Any advice would be great. I am exhausted and at a loss as to what to do next. We have not seen a specialist yet or had any testing done. Not sure if this is related he also started snoring sometimes too. Again any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello!

It is frustrating when the reflux goes away and comes back. Just when you thought you had seen the worst of it, you are back to medication and a special diet. It will get better but you have a terrible sleep issue right now to resolve.

Teething or an illness can cause a temporary worsening of the reflux. Sometimes it seems that the symptoms get worse around 6 months or so when solids are introduced. I wonder if you have started giving him baby food or cereal. Any rashes or reactions? My reflux babies did not have allergies but they really had a strong dislike of baby food early on. I think it must have been uncomfortable for them to eat. Maybe it caused fullness or gas? I will never know.

The snoring is the one thing that really caught my attention. It is unusual for a baby to snore. I would ask the doctor about this. Does he have large adenoids or tonsils? history of respiratory illnesses? I would want to know why he is snoring-who knows, maybe that would explain why he can't sleep at night.

Please feel free to write back to give an update or share any additional information about your little guy. Maybe someone else will share their story about a snoring baby.

Just post it below.

Thanks,

Jan

Jan thanks for replying. Kaden actually sleep the best he has in a long time. We put him in the pack n play, in the nap nanny and in our room. We wanted to see if it was ok to have him sleep in it first since he is much bigger now than when we bought it. He only woke up twice. WOW I could not believe it. I guess the nap nanny really helped with his reflux. I am going to call the doctor about the snoring too.
