Apples prevent my acid reflux from occurring.

By Susan Thursday, February 18, 2010

I have had acid reflux for the last 10 yrs and have suffered night after night with attacks that last 1-2 hrs.  During those times I would not only have terrible burning in my throat and chest but could not talk and would place a cold cloth on my chest and pace until it subsided.   My doctor prescribed the purple pill and it seemed to work most of the time for a while, but I would still have attacks unless I constantly watched what & when I ate.

I decided to take matters into my own hands and went to the health food store for answers.  I discovered Apple Cider Vinegar pills and took them with meals.  These caused some heartburn and helped cosiderably but did not eliminate my problem.   Finally, I tried eating an apple (only half an apple most of the time) when I get heartburn, and it gives me immediate relief.  Now I eat either a half of an apple or a whole before I go to bed at night and I am reflux free.  I still elevate myself and have purchased an adjustable bed but I don't have any problems when traveling as long as I have a couple pillows and an apple.

An apple may not work for everyone, but it works for me and it is worth a try.  I wish someone would have clued me into apples for reflux years ago and I could have avoided a lot of misery.  Maybe there is something to that saying of an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
