Can gerd go up as far as to cause severe pain in the sinuses? I've been having this problem for quite a while where the pain actually starts in my sinus and then moves to behind my breastbone. The pain comes in waves also and can last for hours. Is this familiar to anyone and...

Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:05 PMHi Jan. Thanks for your reply. I went to my Dr and she is sending me for an ultrasound on Monday. She is thinking gallbladder problems since the pain I have comes in waves when I have an attack. If all that comes out ok, then I guess we'll go the gerd route. I just want to get to the bottom of it. The attacks are too painful.

Severe Gerd and sinus pain
Dianne
Sunday, November 04, 2007 at 04:39 PMI also have severe gerd and sinus problems 24/7. It is so bad I lose my voice and have sore throats and sharp pains behind my eyes from my sinues, I was told 4 years ago I should have the fundo but I tried to avoid it and just got my gallbladder out which the surgeon thought might be part of the problem. Things have not gotten any better.
And everything I have read and have been told about the surgery is not too promising. In order to have the surgery you have to have the 24 hour ph testing which is very uncomfortable. Even my surgeon tried it and told me, it was aweful, he actually said he cried. I thing I am going to have to get the surgery but I was hoping they would come up with a new way to do the ph test. I heard they might be coming out with somekind of device you just swallow. any one know about this?

Hello! There is some medical evidence of a connection between GERD and sinus issues. My daughter often refluxes/regurgites so forcefully that she can feel the acid go into her sinus cavity. It feels strange and perhaps painful. I wonder if you have talked with your primary doctor or specialist about this problem. Many Ears, Nose and Throat specialists are familiar with GERD and the sinus problems associated with GERD. Maybe you can get referred to a specialist.
Another issue with the pain is that GERD can cause referred pain. The pain can radiate to other areas-thus some people with gerd experience shoulder, back and chest pain.
You and the doctor need to look at the symptoms and decide what the source of the problem is. The doctor can look at other common causes of sinus pain such as a chronic sinus infection or blockage, allergy, GERD or a combination.
By the way, have you had any tests for sinus or GERD issues? medications for either? Let me know.
Best wishes, Jan
