I'm really scared!

By Brandon_Jet Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Hi I'm new to this site,

I'm really worried about how this acid reflux if affecting my life and my mental health.  I have had it for about 4 years (i am now 28) and over the last 6 months it has gotten worse.  I have seen a specialist, who was unhelpful just saying 'it'll get better on its own' but is not.  My GP is also not being very helpful.

I have now developed a cough, it feels like an irritation in my gullet and when i cough i make a whooping type noise.  I then get a weird taste in my mouth.

I hate this, I get really scared all the time that this is something serious and no one is listening to me! I take Nexium once a day which helps with my chronic burping, i also take Motillium before every meal.  I think this cough is also contributing to back pain as well.

I have read up a lot about this and seen that these symptoms can develop into cancer, this terrifies me - and nothing I do is really shifting these symtoms.

Can anyone offer me any advise?

Thanks

Brandon

The best thing for you to do is go to a gastrologist. They specialize in this kind of thing and will be able to help you. I'll just bet it is what you need. Good luck.

Dear Brandon,

My son is 20 and for years he suffered from what you have.  Doctor after doctor gave him PPI's and try this, try that then "Its all in his head".   What I discovered after

much research (and prayer) was that he was ACIDIC.   Yes he does have IBS-c which is constipation and fullness after eating to the point of vomiting and belching terribly.

I took him off ALL medication doctors gave him and started him on baking soda, magnesium and potassium in the morning and in the evening, five days a week.  He hasnt had a bout of reflux in over 2 years.  Check out this website  earthclinic.com and research the baking soda recipe for reflux.  What is happening is that becuase your body is so acidic, the food in your stomach is just sitting there fermenting causing your fullness, bad taste, reflux and belching all day long.  The baking soda recipe will akalize your body and you will feel so much better.  Good luck because it was our last resort after the best of doctors and it has been successful for my son.  Just read the testimonials....                                                      LAURIE

this is a very serious condition and erosion will continue as long as you leave this untreated. sounds like you are already in the serious stages of esphogical erosion, this is a precursor to cancer!

my brother had the same issue and he just had his entire esphogus replaced.

please move on past this g.p. what a disgrace that he has not even offered to do any testing to see what might be wrong.

good luck to you.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I am about your age and am going through the same thing.  I already went to a gastro-enterologist and did an endoscopy and I have GERD.  I'm trying different natural remedies as well as having tried conventional prescription meds.  Try going to a naturopathic doctor. They will try a different approach with you.  But also go get an endoscopy so that you know the extent of your inflammation. Good luck.

Brandon, I have been diagnosed with Barrett's disease for the last 10 years.  I am now 36 years old and am having terrible stomach pain, nausea, and wt loss.  I was diagnosed at such a young age that I really didn't take it very seriously, and to be honest follow up was not done properly.  I felt like everytime I complained about my pain in the past 2 years, the doctors did not take me seriously enough.  I heard about me being too young for Barrett's, then they gave me different acid blockers, told me to change my diet and go home.  Today I have to have another endoscope to check for changes.  I wish I would have taken this more seriously when I was first told, and I wish I had developed a bigger voice when it was "all in my head".  Now, worse case scenerio, esoph. cancer is possible.  Chances are very low <1% i am told.  but, Barrett's is also not a young person disease I am told.  So, what are my chances now?  I have 3 daughters and a loving husband who have put up with my pain, crying, vomiting and such for years now.  Hopefully, news will be positive today and a permanent lifestyle change will be ahead.  I am serious this time.  You should really, really, speak up for yourself.  You know your body better than most, if you truly feel issues are getting harder to deal with, then find another doctor.  I have been a nurse for over a decade now, and I am telling you, your right as a patient is most important.  and you are your own advocate in your health.  Find another doctor in another town if that is what it takes to help alleviate your symptoms.  You deserve better, and the symptoms will likely only get worse.  Don't wait too long, for 2, 3rd, or even 4th opinion.  it doesn't matter how long it takes, do it.  Good luck with life, and I hope you do feel well soon.  Catherine H.

The wheezing sounds like it could be vocal chord dysfunction due to the irritation of your vocal chords from the gerd.  My daughter has this problem.  She is currently on prevacid, which is now over the counter, but will be slowly weaned off in the spring.  You need to change your diet, it won't be easy but it is possible.  Her G.I. has told her no dairy, no soy, no fried foods, no citric fruit and no tomatoes or tomatoe products.  Sleep on 2 or more pillows that will help with things coming up in your throat.  Everyone thought she had severe asthma, it took several different doctors to finally come up with what was going on.  Go to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor and a G.I.  If you aren't happy with their diagnosis, try another.  It took us 7 years to finally get this diagnosed properly.

Hey everyone,

thanks for your comments....to follow up on this post i went to see the gastro doctor...I had endoscopy and ph tests back in 2005 - he said that given my symptoms, it is unlikely anything will have changed between then and now, so he didn't see the point in doing all that again.  He said if i wanted to be done with this once and for all then an operation would be necessary.  I have changed my meds and I'm taking Pariet which is really helping.

With regards to the chest pain - he didn't think that it was related to the acid reflux, instead he took into cosideration that I work at a computer all day and that as i have been having back troubles as well - the chest pain was referral pain.  I went to see a physio therapist and she agreed.  I have been doing some exercises and stretches, and the chest pain is easing up whcih is great - so I see less urgency in having the operation.

But its not all great news, I now have a new symtpom with the reflux (i think) I feel like i have a ball of goo in my throat! i feel i need to keep clearing it - and occasionally it feels as though something is pressing on my gag reflex that makes me salivate in a big way! it gets worse as the day goes on - but its usually eased by sitting a different way or drinking water.  I dont see a massive urgency to bring this up with my doctor yet - i have read on here that other people have this symptom...and there isn't much that can be done.

I will be sure to update again if anything else develops!!

Thanks again

Brandon

I didn’t know how many people suffer from Acid-reflux, I will try to help as many as I can, I’m 59 years old, 3 years ago I was suffering from Acid-reflux, I tried just about all the drugs in the market but, it didn’t help much, and the side effects were terrible, a friend of mine told me about this natural food supplement that he tried, I ordered and tried myself, it was amazing, no side effects, I didn’t have to go on a diet, I eat and drink anything any time as much as I want, and I mean anything including coffee, sodas. pizza, chocolate spicy foods (my wife is mexican),. I didn’t have to make any lifestyles changes, I don’t have to elevate my head when I sleep and it lasted for more than a year, I had to order it 2 times since for myself and 1 time for my daughter and my son, my daughter was 18 years old and 32 weeks pregnant, my son was 10, the baby is now 13 months old and my daughter and my son had forgotten about Acid-reflux, until two weeks ago my daughter ask me for the web site address  because one of her friends at school have reflux, I have told many of my friend about it, try it and tell your friends too, let me know if it work for you, the web site is betasupplements.com.
