Double Bubble and Half the Heartburn?

By Krystle Kopacz Tuesday, September 04, 2007

Hi there, this is Krystle Kopacz, producer for MyAcidRefluxConnection.com.

Here's an interesting story from the New York Times News Service: Heartburn may be eased by chewing gum. Seems kind of odd, especially since peppermint has long been thought to aggravate acid reflux symptoms.(Read about foods that can trigger GERD symptoms here.)

The story does not say what flavor of sugar-free gum the study used. It did say, however, that saliva generated by the chewing seemed to be the reason for fewer acid reflux symptoms. According to the Times, "the saliva stimulated by chewing seemed to neutralize acid and help force fluids back to the stomach."

Another home-grown fix -- but does it work for you?
