My grandson is 1 1/2 yrs old and living on pediasure, breast milk and an occasional jar of strained mango.  He used to begin eating and then stopped totally.  Therapists think he is in pain when swallowing.  They have tried medication for acid reflux and he spits it out.  He also has sensory integration disfunction.  Will He ever eat and what did you do?

    Hello!

It was a slow and steady process to help my daughter eat and grow. I struggled with feeding through the toddler years. I am glad your grandson has a feeding therapist or feeding team helping. That is really important. When there are sensory issues and reflux, feeding seems really unpleasant.Plus toddlers are by nature picky or "careful" about eating and have strong feelings about food!

In addition to the feeding therapy, it is important to reduce/eliminate pain from reflux. This can be very hard to do with a 1.5 year old who really cannot tell you how he is feeling. The doctor may need to try different medications/ combinations of treatments to find the best way to reduce the pain.

I have heard of some children needed Periactin to help increase the appetite. I am not sure if this would be a good treatment for a child with sensory issues.

Be sure to read the other articles I have written about feeding on this site and let me know if you have other questions too.
