I have been taking Nexium for a few months now. It has helped all of my symptoms. However, everytime I try to get off I start feeling bad again. Symptoms include Heartburn, Nauseau, Coughing. Most of these symptoms occur after eating. How long is it safe to take Nexium?

Hello Angel,
While Nexium is for the short term healing of GERD, many patients find that they have symptoms for a long period of time. If you have tried going off the medication and the symptoms return, it is a good indicator that you still need the medication. Some doctors will take a patient off of meds for a "medication holiday" to see if the symptoms return. Like any prescription medication, be sure to follow up with the prescribing doctor on a regular basis to determine if the medication should be continued. Over time, you and the doctor may be able to decrease the use of Nexium or switch to a acid reducer.
Don't be alarmed if months of years go by and you still need the Nexium. My daughter needed a similar medication for several years. Now she only uses an over the counter medication as needed. Perhaps some other visitors on this site will share their experiences.
Best wishes,
