If your local doctor is up to date on the latest research related to reflux treatment, sit back and count your lucky stars. If not, and you find yourself in need of a second opinion in a far away place – fear not, help may be available.

There are several organizations willing to assist you if you have exhausted your local medical options and feel the need to connect with a nationally-recognized doctor or medical group. Many times, these doctors are located in another part of the country, and flying to get the best help available may be your best option.

One such organization is Miracle Flights for Kids (www.miracleflights.org). The goal of Miracle Flights for Kids is to remove barriers to healthcare access and improve the quality of life for our nation’s children. By working with pilots and commercial airlines, Miracle Flights for Kids is often able to provide families with transportation to and from treatment as many times as needed. Our family benefited greatly from this program on our first trip to the University of Missouri to seek reflux treatment for our son.

Another organization is Angel Flight America (www.angelflightamerica.org). This organization also exists to help families with free flights to seek specialized medical treatment. This charitable organization works with over 7,200 volunteer pilots and volunteers in 50 states.

These are just two such organizations that may be able to help you get the best possible care for your family. Each group has a unique set of qualifiers necessary to obtain a free flight. After a little of your own investigation about the travel possibilities, your next step might be to talk to your local doctor. It may be important that he or she is supportive of your efforts, since many times these organizations will need medical proof of your need to travel for the best care. Hopefully, your local doctor will be as passionate about finding the best care for your family as you are.
