Dear Joyce, My daughter had a peg or gastrostomy tube operation a few years ago. It really helped her get the nutrition she needed to grow. When she didn't need the tube anymore, it was removed. Now she can eat just fine.
Does your grandson have gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD? What is he able to eat right now? Is he losing weight or small for his age? Sorry for all of the questions! Lets chat some more.
Than You for your prompt reply Thomas does not have his operation till next week.
We have not had a diagnosis yet, but they have suggested the peg operation meanwhile because he cannot keep any food down, in fact he refuses to eat, so it is good to know he will be getting fed through his tummy.
I will keep you informed with his progress Thank You once again
Hi! Vicki sorry to take so long to "E" mail you on Thomas's progress but to bring you up to date he has had his Peg operation in place for 4-weeks now and seems to be coping well he has 75ml tramingin milk every three hours and is taking a little mashed food just before his feed (about 2 teaspoons) he is now putting on weight he is 19lbs and seems more content in himself. He still arches his back though which is rather worrying as we are told it could be due to reflux but no one can say for sure so I don't know what to think. Hope your daughter is keeping well now after her operation.
Dear Joyce, I am so glad Thomas is able to take in more nourishment and gain weight after his operation. Are you feeling comfortable using the feeding tube? I found that it was a bit overwhelming at first and I had a lot of questions. My daughter used a feeding pump-a small machine to drip the formula into her stomach very slowly. It took a while to get used to it but then I learned how to keep it running.
Unfortunately, the feeding tube does not prevent gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. The arching may be a symptom of pain or discomfort. If too much food is put into his stomach, it can be very painful so the size of the feedings may need to be adjusted. He may need a small amount of formula placed in the tube more often.
I am so glad to hear that Thomas is making some progress!! It's probably taking a little time for him to adjust to eating without suffering from the pain.
Do stay in touch and let us know how he and you are doing!!
