I've been taking Nexium 40mg/day for about 3 months. I note that the typical dosage period is 4 to 8 weeks. How long can it safely continue to be taken?
The medication has been tested and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for short term treatment. Other studies have shown that Nexium is safe for long term treatment. This type of drug, known as a Proton Pump Inhibitor or PPI has a long track record for safety, dating back to the 1980's.
With any medication, it is important to work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan. Ask your doctor if you should change the treatment plan-increase, decrease or stop the treatment. Even if the doctor recommends long term treatment, review your symptoms and treatment on a regular basis, at least every 6 months. Sometimes the doctor will ask you to stop taking the medication for a week or two to see if the symptoms return. Other times, the doctor may recommend taking medication as needed rather than every day.

Thank you Jan.
Hi M,
Have you had a conversation with your doctor? In this posting, Dr Eisner speaks about nexium and long term use.
Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!!
