Sensation of getting food stuck in throat

By artist66 Monday, November 19, 2007
Hello! Brief history: Had endoscopy two years ago and was diagnosed with GERD/hiatal hernia. Have been able to go off medication for 3 - 6 months at a time. Have had difficulty swallowing pills for a long time. Over the past several months, have noticed an increased sensation of getting food stuck in my throat. Endoscopy from two years ago showed no sign of Barretts. Am currently taking 40 mg Zegrid daily. Have not had any chest pains or vomiting, no unusual weight loss and with Zegrid, heartburn seems to be generally under control with controlled diet. Wondering if anyone had any ideas for me on the possible reasons for the sensation of getting food stuck? I am not coughing and my voice hasn't been hoarse. I'm just scared because I read one of the first signs of cancer is difficulty swallowing, but I had an Endoscopy 2 years ago so I don't know if I am just being paranoid or have real reason for concern. I am schedule for another endoscopy soon. Thanks!

Hello Artist66!

There is an article about Plummer-Vinson syndrome located here. There is some interesting insight into the issues involved with swallowing, particularly the onset of Acid Reflux. There is also an interesting article here about webs and rings. This is an issue that is either thought to be congenital or something that develops over time, but can cause acid reflux. According to these articles, an iron suppliment can help with the swalling difficulties.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Hello! I am not a doctor so I do not want to suggest a diagnosis. However, I just attended a medical conference and there was much discussion of Eosinophilic Esophagitis. One of the common symptoms in adults is the sensation of food getting stuck. I have just posted a blog on this topic and there is a great deal of information on the internet too.

Your doctor will certainly look at all causes of your symptoms and an endoscopy is a good tool for diagnosing your condition.

Good luck, Jan

Embarassed Hello! I am also having a real hard time getting food down. Cann't eat any more breads or meats. I've lost weight. I've had a endoscopy done and I was told I've got a upper hiatal hernia. But now I don't have any insurance to keep going to doctors. Are there any herbs or foods that would help. I'd love to be able to eat a steak or even a piece of toast again. Any advice out there? Thank you   karinreno

hi i'm mike an rn,  you need to take a ppi basically omeprazole 40mg po daily OTC, preferrably zegrid but you would need a prescription for this one. stay away from acidic fruits, you should some how follow up w/a GI specialist to r/o barrettes syndrome which could lead to adenocarcinoma. DON'T have late heavy meals, sleep w/hob elevated. if can't afford omeprazole OTC, take an h1 blocker such as ranitidine 150mg daily.
