are we crazy?

By Kyrasmommy Thursday, October 28, 2010

ever since we brought our baby girl home and started her on formula, its been an ongoing NIGHTMARE! when she couldn't (or wouldn't) breastfeed and i would pump get hardly anything, we decided to just go with formula...well, then she was on similac and the screaming started and was worse and worse as the days went on and she sounded almost congested ...like she couldnt catch her breath but she never turned colors or stopped breathing...almost like she had mucousy junk in her throat...then we heard about the recall of similac! so then her ped put her on soy formula and for a few days she was ok but then the screaming and gasping and "junky breathing" was worse again....then we went to nutramigen with cereal in it ....then finally she is on zantac now...and she seems somewhat better but my real question is if anyone else has had babies that have respiratory like issues from reflux...her pediatrician did not seem concerned but i worry that it could get worse....ANY tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Kyrasmommy and welcome to the HealthCentral Community! This is your place to be heard and understood. You are not crazy. However, you are dealing with this crazy thing called reflux and it does cause more worry and work for us.

Some babies have silent reflux and the food/acid come up from the stomach into the esophagus (called reflux or regurgitation) at the same time that food is coming down. It can sound loud and raspy. At times it may sound like wheezing, a more serious respiratory condition. There may even be coughing and choking. In rare cases, there may be aspiration.

You will need to watch your little one carefully for signs of silent reflux and more serious complications. Call the doctor or take her to the doctor or emergency room if she is having trouble breathing or managing the mucous. I am hoping she will learn to manage the mucous as she matures and the treatments for reflux help keep the food down. That is what happens most of the time. Maybe that is why the doctor isn't concerned at this point. Keep in mind that you know your little Kyra best and if you think something is wrong, trust your instincts and check in with the doctor.

I hope that helps you. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

Hello! I always tell parents, there is nothing that I could say (or anyone could say) to make the worry completely go away when your baby is having breathing problems. You will always be watching carefully and worried. Trust your gut and you will know when it is at the point where you need to see the doctor.

Hang in there...Jan
