3 1/2 yr old with reflux

My 3 1/2 yr old has reflux & is not responding to Prevacid & a PPI. She had reflux as an infant & used thickener for her bottles. Seemed to outgrow at around 12 or 18mo. She has been tested for allergies & nothing showed up. Her EGD showed normal, but she was on Prevacid at the time. Symptoms are day & night. She coughs a little then acts like she is going to spit up or vomit. Sometimes she does, but usually does not. Happens at night in her sleep! Sounds like she is gasping for air. Scary! Doctors are considering a sleep study. Not sure what to do. Has been going on for over 6 weeks.

Hello!

So sorry you are taking another ride on the reflux rollercoaster! It must be frustrating to think you are done with reflux and then it comes back again.

The first step is finding out what is triggering the cough. While it could be reflux, it may be something else. Keep working with the doctor and try one thing at a time.

My daughter was evaluated by a pulmonologist (lung specialist) for her cough and that was very helpful.

My nephew was just diagnosed yesterday with silent reflux. He seemingly didn't have any symptoms until he developed this cough which persisted through the night. They went to their pediatrician and lo and behold - acid reflux. He had started drooling quite a bit and then little by little, they put together the pieces. His seems to be extremely mild and may be cured with just sitting him up after he eats (which is what the doctor recommended) for a 1/2 hour. But the coughing was getting severe and lengthy enough that they were concerned. I hope for your baby's sake (and yours) that the coughing is not a sign of the reflux, it can be. Let us know how she's doing and what you find out. Take care!
