Can the liquid colonoscopy prep (Nulytely) make acid reflux worse?

Madge Community Member August 19, 2007
  • Every 5 to 10 years I get a colonoscopy. When I've had them before, I had no problem drinking the Nulytely liquid prep, although it did make me nauseous at times. But now I have acid reflux. I've just gotten it under control and am taking Nexium. Am down to 20 mg a day and doing okay if I avoid trigger foods.

My question is whether anyone here has had reflux problems from the liquid colonoscopy preps? The one I have to use contains a lot of salt and citrus flavoring  (the only flavor I seem to tolerate well), and cistrus and too much salt are reflux triggers for me. I'd hate to have reflux pains during the prep and not be able to take any Tums, Mylanta, etc. for the reflux discomfort.  But maybe I'm worrying for nothing.  Have any of you had experience with this?  I'm hoping the prep won't be too hard on my reflux. Thanks very much.

I know that my GERD was a direct result of my colonscopy or prep for the colonscopy. I also used the liquid prep. I never had GERD prior to my colonscopy.  I have had GERD ever since the colonscopy (5 years ago). I am currently taking Nexium to control it. My doctors also say they never heard of this and shrug it off.

Yes,I have had the same problems ever since I had a colonoscopy. I had never had reflux before I had the colonoscopy. It has been a nightmare for me. In addition, when I took aciphex or Pepcid, it caused a change in the ph balance of my body and I began to experience vaginal yeast-like symptoms. Doctors act like they have never heard of anything like this at...

My husband had a colonoscopy on 7-5-07. He became nauseous on the way home from the procedure, and ever since has had hoarseness, burning esophagus, and hoarseness in his voice. He also has lost about 20 lbs., because he has no appetite. Everything tastes salty and nothing tastes good. The gastroentologist prescribed Aciphex, and his family Dr. prescribed Carafate...

He also has lost about 20 lbs., because he has no appetite. Everything tastes salty and nothing tastes good. The gastroentologist prescribed Aciphex, and his family Dr. prescribed Carafate before each meal. Neither of these has helped. He has had colonoscopies ever since he was 55 yrs. old, but never drank Nulytely for the other procedures. He is at a loss as to what to do as the Drs. have been no help. He has always been a good eater, but now he takes a few bites and that's it.

I didn't have a problem with the prep, and I think it was because I talked my doctor into letting me try a HalfLytely kit instead. For that, I took 4 dulcolax tablets with one glass of water at noon. Then four hours later I drank the liquid prep, but it was only half as much as the usual gallon size of Nulytely. For that, I took 4 dulcolax tablets with one glass of water at noon. Then four hours later I drank the liquid prep, but it was only half as much as the usual gallon size of Nulytely. Because I drank less, I never reached the point where I got  nausea and it wasn't too bad.

I still have that familiar salty taste and hoarseness at times (in fact I've had it all day today), but on other days I've been all right as long as I don't eat reflux trigger foods. Evene though I take Nexium each morning. I still can't eat tomatoes, fried or citrus foods, spicy ones, or coffee.Too much butter or salt bother me too, so I just avoid them.  No food tastes so good that I want fullblown reflux back.

I'm glad I had the colonoscopy done, though, because they found and removed a polyp (the kind that can become malignant) plus a twisty, loopy redundant colon.  Never had a redundant colon before. I'll need a scope every three years now, and will use the Half Lytely prep again, probably..

What kind of prep did your husband use the other times (before using Nulytely)? I hope he'll get rid of his problems.

I have had the same experience. I also when through the liquid prep a couple of weeks ago and ever since have had an acid reflux caused burning of my throat and a slight degree of horseness.   I haven't seen the doctor as yet to determine if the two are connected.

I appreciate your input.  Too much salt on foods has usually caused throat burning and excess phlegm, and sometimes the lump-in-the-throat sensation that goes with reflux. I'd hate to think that the colonoscopy prep could undo all  my hard work to  heal my reflux.  Maybe a few more people will reply here. Let me know if you learn anything,...

I'm sure there are a lot of us with reflux problems who need colonoscopies from time to time.

Made my acid refulx worse; particularly my larynx.  I spent months trying to heal GERD and now, with the colonscopy prep, I'm expereincing set back.

I developed AR after a colonoscopy (next day) doctor said no connection but I'm sure the prep, Mg citrate and 4 Dulcolax caused problem although it is possible my sphincter dilated during the procedure and acid burned my esophagus.  I has been a month now and the only thing that gives instant relief is Mylanta.  Doctor said never heard of...

I'm having a colonoscopy in a few weeks.  I really need to know whether the liquid prep or the Dulcolax can aggravate my acid reflux, and if so, what to do. My doctors aren't any help. They just shrug their shoulders.  Any advice out there from anyone who's had a colonoscopy and also has acid reflux?  (I'm taking 20 mg. of Nexium...

My acid reflux got worse after drinking this prep.  I also projectile vomitted in addition to cleaning out colon. Now, I can't believe that I was advised to take this prep with GERD.  I had a endoscopy the same day which was the reason I went to the doctor.  Adding the colonoscopy was at the doctor's recommendation. BTW, it has been 6 weeks...
