My 14 month will still not sleep through the night.  He was diagnosed with GERD a little late in life, and is currently on Prevacid 2x a day.  I still wake him up at 10:30 pm for a sleep feeding to get a little more formula in him, but he wakes up at 4 in the morning regardless.  He is presently taking a little less than 25 oz. a day, but is eating three meals and a few snacks.  Does anybody have a thought on how to get him to sleep through the night?

Hello Henry's Mom,

I know how precious sleep is when you have been sleepless for 14 long months. Lets hope 2009 is the start of a restful year (well, its all relative when you have a 14 month old!)...

So, I have a few questions for you:

Does the doctor think Henry needs the additional feeding at 10:30pm for growth/weight gain?

Does Henry want to eat at 4am or does he just think it is time to get up and start his day? If you feed him, does he go back to sleep?

How do you give him the Prevacid? Does it seem to be working for his symptoms? What are his reflux symptoms at this point besides the night waking?

Here are some ideas:

You will need to sort out the ideas since you know Henry best.

Is it possible that the 10:30pm feeding is causing some digestive discomfort. I know it is recommended to stop all feedings 2-3 hours before bedtime. Also, some parents find success elevating the sleep surface at night. These things will help if you think Henry is waking due to pain/discomfort.

If he is waking out of habit: Try decreasing or eliminating the night feeding. Help him to self comfort using a blankie or stuffed toy. Help him associate sleep with the stuffed toy. There are many books on helping your child learn to sleep. They are all based on the idea that a child DOES NOT have a medical condition such as reflux to make sleep painful/uncomfortable.

Most likely, you are dealing with a combination of the two. This is where the doctor can help you determine if Henry is on the best dose of medication to decrease symptoms. It can take a few weeks or longer to help him learn to sleep.

Let me know your thoughts and what you have tried so far.

I didn’t know how many people suffer from Acid-reflux, I will try to help as many as I can, I’m 59 years old, 3 years ago I was suffering from Acid-reflux, I tried just about all the drugs in the market but, it didn’t help much, and the side effects were terrible, a friend of mine told me about this natural food supplement that he tried, I ordered and tried myself, it was amazing, no side effects, safe for all ages including babies, I didn’t have to go on a diet, I eat and drink anything any time as much as I want, and I mean anything including coffee, sodas. pizza, chocolate spicy foods (my wife is mexican),. I didn’t have to make any lifestyles changes, I don’t have to elevate my head when I sleep and it lasted for more than a year, I had to order it 2 times since for myself and 1 time for my daughter and my son, my daughter was 18 years old and 32 weeks pregnant, my son was 10, the baby is now 13 months old and my daughter and my son had forgotten about Acid-reflux, until two weeks ago my daughter ask me for the web site address  because one of her friends at school have reflux, I have told many of my friends about it, try it and tell your friends too, let me know if it work for you, the web site is betasupplements.com.
