My little Kendra who would only eat asleep

By Julie C Sunday, February 15, 2009

Kendra went to see her Gi specialist. She would only eat when she was asleep. I feared it was reflux but the doctors missed it because she never spit up. She had her upper GI. She does have severe reflux. She is now on prevacid 7.5 mg twice a day. She got WAY better for a while and would eat but they put her on neocate and the stuff is SO thin she chokes all the time now she hates to eat again. I am beginning to really hate doctors why would they put a baby with reflux on a formula so thin it makes no sense to me. And the stupid doctors wont return my call and they act like im just paranoid or something. This whole thing has got my nerves so bad that I'm actually makin her a nervous reck. The stuff is really wierd to mix i really dont understand the directions the website says add extra water and the container dont so am i supposed to or not? If you dont you end up with 5 scoops and 4 ounces to actually feed her by what the container says. I am so confused I wish it hadnt got to this point with her i fear that she will hate me because im am the one who tries to feed her. If anyone knows anything about this formula let me know. Also does the prevacid lose its affect after some time maybe? another thing they put her on benethechol and she had some strange side effects and i stopped giving it to her i know the doctor is gonna be mad but she wouldnt call me back to listen to the side effects she just scheduled a follow up for next week so i am just gonna wait before i give it to her again to talk to the doc. is anyone familiar with benethechol? or its side effects. she seemed to kinda go unresponsive or something for like 10 seconds at a time it was wierd and scared me really bad im afraid to give it to her anymore.

Hello Julie,

Doesn't is always seem like we need to talk to the doctor on a weekend? And here it is a 3 day weekend for many doctors too. Luckily HealthCentral never sleeps and never takes a weekend off. If only we were doctors...but we are not, we are concerned parents like you.

It sounds like you have concerns about the formula and the Bethanacol medication. On a weekend, there should be an on call doctor for the gastroenterologist. There may be a way to leave a message or ask to have the doctor paged. If that doesn't work, you can call Kendra's primary care doctor and ask for some assistance. I wouldn't want to advise you on the formula since doctors sometimes have a special recipe in mind. For instance, some want to add more formula to increase calories per ounce. The Bethanacol can cause side effects and needs to be discussed with the doctor. You might need to wean off of the medication to prevent further side effects. So it really is best to try to locate a doctor today or tomorrow.

There is a great deal of information on this website about sleep feeding. You can use the search function to locate the information. Keep in mind that sleep feeding can be a good band aid treatment for reflux until the cause of the sleep feeding can be found. Will Kendra take the Neocate when drowsy or asleep? If she will, that is good. It will allow you to keep her hydrated until the GI appt. If she will not take any formula or fluids, she may be on a "feeding strike". Some babies just decide it is too painful to eat at all. If she is refusing all intake (water, formula, pedialyte), please call the doctor right away or take her to the emergency department.

Hang in there and let us know what you find out.

She is off everything except the Prevacid twice a day and back on the Alimentum again because the neocate being so thin made the reflux worse. She is still only eating about 20 ounces a day... every once in a while she will eat awake but mostly only asleep she basically has no appetite at all i just have to try to feed her and hope she eats, and wont go nuts just because i try to feed her. I hope things get better soon she has been on the prevacid for over 2 weeks now and her dose has been increased. I have been referred to a new GI because i wasnt happy with the old one so we will see what they want to do. Everyone says its something she will get over once they get the pain under control but i dont know. Now that we keep doing the formula changes she seems to be having some kind of sudden pains because she will just start screaming out of the blue and then be fine in a few minutes its wierd. Thanks again for the support and hopefully my sweetie will get better soon and start liking to eat again.

Hope you find help from my answer:

My sone was diagnosed with "reflux" at 2 weeks old. Put on Prevacid, then diagnosed with a milk allergy, then put on ELECARE. It's the same as Neocate differenet manufacturer. He threw up the ELECARE worse than the Nutramagin.

I sought after a doctor in NYC Leo Galland. My son was given a course of Nystatin to clear up a CANDIDA overgrowth and with in 2 days stopped throwing up. I call it throwing up becuase when it happens as much as 30 times a day and change of clothing is needed, spitting up just does not describe it.

Research probiotics. I used this with my son and gave him Culturelle every other bottle from 2 months old. It worked and the throwing up dimished but did not disappear. This is when Dr Galland thought it might be another bacteria.

Good luck and god bless. Always question everything. My big question was why does nmy child have this and the infant down the street does not? There is something wrong and Prevacid is just covering up the problem.

I know my son had issues while in the NICU with liquids and the therapist used a product called "Thickenit" to actually thicken the formula.  Rice Cereal has also been used to thicken formula.  I would not advise doing either without the supervision and recommendation of the physician, but it's something I highly recommend asking about.

Also, have they weight adjusted her meds?  The dosage needs to be adjusted as she grows.

Good luck!
