Hello doctor,
my eight year old son complain tummy hurt, nausea and vomiting with burps and passing gas in morning time this condtion is going on and on since may 2009,we consulted the Pediatrician and blood test,Xray and stool tests are done which were normal, then he was refered to Child GI specialist who did the upper GI endoscopy and biopsy on him.The results indiacted that he has some inflammation in the intestine .he told that Lactose intolerence is the reason.we stopped regular milk and strated lactaid milk for him.For a month the symptoms went down but again reappered .we again went to the pediatrician who prescribed Prevacid for him .I want to know that is the diagnosis of Lactose intolerence is right or not?because his symptoms reapperaed again inspite of giving him lactaid milk.now its December 2009 and my son is suffering every day .as mother i am worried whats going on with my son, please help.
My 10 1/2 yr old son complains that his stomach hurts after he eats. His eating habits have certainly changed over the past 1-2 months. We took him to the doctor who put him on prevacid and said to manage a strict diet...no spicy foods etc... The prevacid gave him diarreah and we stopped it. Now I give him a tums after he eats. Although we are noticing his stomach doesn't do well with anything greasy(hamburger, french fries, pizza.) We are of indian descent so I cook him bland indian food which in general if very health...rice, vegetables, breads. should I put him backon prevacid b/c he still does complain about eating some foods. I really don't want too, but if I have to I will.
Thanks,
Dear Anonymous,
You should certainly seek the input of your pediatrician or a pediatric gastroenterologist on your son. His history is certainly suspicious for acid related disease and his response to antacids would support this. While diarrhea is known to occur in some with drugs like Prevacid the effect may be less with another medication in the same class. Talk to your doctor, discuss other treatment options and understand that his condition is likely very treatable. Good luck!
