Acid Reflux Medications and Side Effects

Do acid reflux medications have any side effects?   Proton pump inhibitors generally have very few side effects. The most common are headache and diarrhea which occur in about 5 percent of patients. Other rare side effects are abdominal pain, constipation, itching, dizziness, swollen ankles, m...

I've been taking Prilosec OTC twice a day (as I was told by a doctor, then told to cut down to once a day once heartburn isn't as bad), & I've notice my breast are sore. It's only a bit worse then when I am on my period... but it makes it hard to tell if the pain is heartburn pain or breast pain... Is this a side effect? And what should I do about it? I've been wearing my bras a hook losers so it doesn't bother me as much...

Some recent research studies seem to indicatre that if those medications for acid reflux (proton pump inhibitors) are taken over 5-7 years they contribute to demineralization of bone. The acid in the

stomach is destroyed by these medications, which is how they combat the effects of acid reflux, but

the acid is needed for the bones to absorb calcium. I have some questions that I will take up with my

gastroenterologist: Is there a need to take these medications for that length of time? And can't

a substitute be used once the initial acid problems have been eliminated with the PPI medications or by some debridement of the bad tissue?

Both my daughter who is 12 taking Omniprezole, and myself who doesn't take anything for stomach pain.  My co-worker is very into stomach issues and suggests this product (http://www.marketamerica.com/rac/index.cfm?action=shopping.wpSearch )in an adult and childrens version:

What Makes Might-A-Mins® Spectrum Isotonix® Digestive Enzymes Unique?

Children in need of neurological, digestive, or metabolic support often need extra digestive support. Might-A-Mins® Spectrum Isotonix® Digestive Enzymes promotes stomach comfort and bowel regularity in children by enhancing enzymatic breakdown of food. The enzymes in this product work to cleave proteins during digestion, making them smaller and easier to digest. Not only does this promote normal digestion and absorption of nutrients, it also promotes bowel regularity.*

Another benefit of Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix Digestive Enzymes is that it is delivered in an isotonic solution. Isotonic solutions bear the same chemical resemblance to blood and tears allowing for superior delivery and complete absorption.

Understanding Digestion

Proper digestion is essential for the body to utilize food for use by cells and tissues. Enzymes are responsible for the breakdown of food into substances that can be used to provide energy to the body. In addition to the physical discomfort caused by poor digestion, undigested food in the gastrointestinal tract serve as fuel to intestinal microbes, causing them to overpopulate and ferment. These fermented microbes lower the pH of the colon and increase bacterial toxins in the gut. Supplementation with digestive enzymes provides the body with the additional support it needs for proper digestion.

Poor digestion goes beyond abdominal discomfort. There is a proposed connection between the function of the digestive system and the brain. Research suggests that promoting normal digestion may in turn support physical health.

I don't know how you can say PPI's have no side effects, everywhere I read on the subject people are having side effects, including myself, dizziness, headache, nausea just to mention a few, you Doctor's say what you think people want to hear while you get your kickbacks from the Drug companies. I don't know which is worse Gerd or the side effects of the medications.

Those symptoms were side effects of the problem, in my case, but the pain was what drove me taking the medications. With all due respect, the doctors need to get their acts together and find a unifying voice and solution on this matter. Pronto. Because their patients are all screaming about the same complaints and are losing their patience. This has gone on too long Dr., for you and your colleagues NOT to know what the source of this trouble is!

I have tried many of the medications available... out of the presription kinds the only one that works for me is nexium. It is possible that these work differently for people as we are all experiencing unique types of the condition.

I have documented my study of acid reflux as well for those interested.
