  1. LONG TERM USE OF PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS

Are you saying that this medication, like Nexium and Prilosec, affect calcium utilization and can be related to bone loss?   I, nor my doctor, have seen research reports of this.  Is there evidence of a connection between long term use of PPI's and bone loss?  I am 72 and in "good health", so, the implications of my long term use of Prilosec are very significant, going on now for 3 years.

Thanks for your question Mr. Cox.

There are a few articles describing how the drugs may increase the risk of hip fracture.

Powerful Antacids Boost Chances of Hip Fracture

Dr. Eisner wrote a SharePost in response to that article, including three issues you should discuss with your doctor about using PPI.

These posts should answer some of your questions. Be sure to talk to your doctor about what you learn and let us know what he tells you.

    Thanks!
