The Problem with Over-the-Counter Acid Reflux Medications

By Jennifer Rackley, Health Guide Wednesday, January 27, 2010
The treatment of acid reflux can be complicated and frustrating for many patients. When treatments based on lifestyle and dietary changes fail many patients require medications to deal with their disease. Until recently most of these treatments required a trip to see a physician and a prescription. ...

Medications worked for me for a couple of days, but my doctor was running out of options, except to go on stronger and stronger medications.  I was concerned with side effects.   So I opted for acupuncture.

I'm so glad I did.  She was able to tell me to eliminate other foods from my diet which produce more acid.  Foods like sweets, sour, and spicey all create more acid.  Vinegar was another item I ate frequently.  I knew about the spicey, but was never told about these other foods from my conventional doctor.  She also suggested I not eat rice and dairy as they are hard to digest.

It ended up that I have two issues.  Foods that cause gas and acid reflux.  Dairy, wheat and rice all cause gas and leave me feeling like I have a lump in my throat.  I have noticed I can tolerate small, very small and limited portions of some of these foods.  Then, I believe the vinegar, tomatoes and spicey cause my acid reflux.

She also told me to eat small portions.  That helps tremendously.

Chocolate and wine cause muscles in your esophogus to relax, allowing the acid to move up into the esophogus.

I have not taken a prescription pill since Oct. 09, since I began seeing her.  I have taken small amounts of OTC mild medications some, but not recently.  Papaya supplements help too.

I hope this helps at least one person who suffers, as I know what you are going through.  Seemed like anything I ate caused reflux.  but, if you eleinate the above culprits, then start adding back after you feel better one by one and monitor your systoms within the first few hours of eating it, you too can feel better soon.

Good Luck!

I used to suffer from Acid-reflux about 3 years ago, I tried some of the prescription drugs in the market but, they didn't help much

A friend of mine recomended a natural food supplement that he had used.

I tried the product and it worked like magic, it stopped the burning and discinfort almost immediately, it's not a drug, no side effects and safe for any age, my daughter was 32 weeks pregnant when she tried too, and about 5 months later we were talking about Acid-reflux because one of her friend has the same disease, my daughter had forgotten about this disease because she didn't suffer from it anymore.

I have ordered the product 2 more times in the last 3 years for myself, I eat anything, drink anything, as much as I want as many times as I wish, no diets.

I see every day the comercials for those drugs and those drugs only provide limited daily reliev and too many side effects, I don't know how to tell people about this amazing food supplement that cured my and my daughter for good.

Thank you Jennifer for writing this. I was glad that you put on about the drug interaction precautions. I worry so much about people not informing their doctors and pharmacists about the OTC medications they are taking. The newest interaction is Plavix and PPIs but it is difficult for the professionals to warn you not to take PPIs with Plavix if you are taking them OTC and not keeping them informed.

I had acid reflux for many years and went through the gammet of medications prescribed by the doctor. My acid reflux problem continued to be an issue until I bought a bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar from the grocery store!

It's been 2 years and I've only had to take a capful of Apple Cider Vinegar!

Problem solved!

Doctors tend to believe what Pharmaceutical companies tell them and the info is given to you because...well..money! How much money was made on my purchased bottle of Apple cider vinegar? lol!

I am also not too happy about pharmaceuticals for acid reflux treatment. I had acid reflux for more than 7 years ... almost 2-3 times a week. I think I spent a couple of thousands dollars on over the count drugs for stomach acid. Have also tried the apple cider vinegar - it helped but not allways. Now I use a LWG water improvement device ... I drink that water and since the first week when I started using it the acid reflux problem dissapeared. My back pains are also gone and I generally feel better. Of course I am carefull not to eat products that use to cause me acid reflux.  I think that taking care of your health is each persons responsibility.
