LINX System for Hard to Treat Acid Reflux
Recently the FDA approved a new medical device for the treatment of GERD that has not responded to diet or prescription medications. The device is made by Torax Medical and is called the LINX Reflux Management System.
The LINX system consists of a string of titanium beads that are placed around the esophagus in the area of the LES. The LINX beads have a magnetic core which causes them to be attracted to each other. As they attract to each other they consequently tighten the LES and limit gastroesophageal reflux episodes.
Side effects that are possible include: nausea, vomiting, swallowing issues and chest pain. In addition, patients implanted with the LINX system will no longer be able to have MRI procedures because the metal interferes with those kind of tests.
It will be interesting to see over the next few years how the LINX system performs. Until now there has not been any device used for the treatment of GERD. Patients who failed dietary and prescription changes in the past only had reflux surgery as an alternative.
