Swallowing issue? Check your neck!

By Jennifer Rackley, Health Guide Tuesday, June 04, 2013

Acid reflux and swallowing issues?  Me too!  Or so I thought.  Swallowing issues have been a problem of mine for quite a while.  I figured it was acid reflux related and I would just need to “deal with it”.  Sometimes I couldn’t get the food or medication down without adding liquid and swallowing 4 or 5 times.  It wasn’t an every day issue… just an annoying one.

A month ago I started doing physical therapy for an unrelated problem.  Part of the physical  therapy included releasing the muscles in my neck, which were quite tight.  I noticed fairly quickly that I was no longer having any issues with my swallowing.

It turns out that the muscles in my neck were so tight that they were putting pressure on my esophagus. Once those muscles loosened up the swallowing issue was a thing of the past.  I was amazed.

If you have a swallowing issue please have it checked out by your doctor first.  Should the acid reflux be ruled out as a cause you may want to look further.  If you have had a previous car accident or even if you simply sit stooped over a computer all day, it could be a muscular issue.  It certainly couldn’t hurt to ask if your neck muscles could be contributing to the problem!
