Obesity Doubles the Risk for Acid Reflux

  • Obesity is a huge issue in our country today.  It is also a huge issue with regard to the acid reflux epidemic.  Extra weight puts additional pressure on the stomach and pushes those contents higher up and often into the esophageal tissue.  Being obese now doubles the risk for developing acid reflux (1).  The higher a patient's BMI the higher the risk of more severe complications from the acid reflux.

If you are obese and have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease then it may be time to make some changes.  We all know that there are foods that one should avoid to help lessen symptoms.  Some of those include: tomato, chocolate, spicy foods, citrus and so on.  Obese patients also need to focus on additional dietary concerns.

In my next blog we will talk about more ways to help shed the pounds and banish the burn.
