Pregnancy can be a huge trigger for many dealing with acid reflux. Women who have never dealt with heartburn before can be sidelined with severe burning and pain. During pregnancy the levels of progesterone increase dramatically and can allow the LES to relax. This relaxation causes a backflow of sto...

This is a great post!! I am a refluxer and am planning on trying to conceive sometime next summer. I am not a mommy yet. Thank you for this post. I too, heard that H-2's are ok to take during pregnancy. I am currently taking Pepcid AC now and feel somewhat of a comfort knowing that it is ok to take during pregnancy. So glad I found your blog!! Are you on Facebook?

Just curious, did you have GERD before your pregnancies, or did you get it during/after your pregnancies? Thanks!!

I never suffered from heartburn before, then 5 weeks into my pregnancy BAM!! It hit my with full force. It's so severe that I have been sleeping sitting up since week 6. I am now in week 15 and still waiting for some relief. I have changed my diet completely but nothing seems to work. I can't take Tums because they cause me to be sick. I currently take generic heartburn medication on a daily basis but it only mildly helps my problem. I am at my wits end. It is something that has taken over my life 24/7. I never have at least 10 minutes of rest from this. My only hope is that it goes away once my baby is born since I've heard some pregnancy symptoms stay with you even after you give birth.

Hello Miserable in LA,

When I had heartburn during pregnancy, I found that a low fat diet (lean meat) and lots of carbs (rice cakes-bags and bags of rice cakes) helped me greatly. I nibbled all day, barely eating a real meal. I sipped water all day too.

I wonder if you have asked your primary care doctor and OB about managing the reflux.Sometimes the reflux gets so bad that it causes vomiting or poor nutrition so if your symptoms are really bothersome or affecting your ability to eat and drink, let the doctor know.

Jan Thank you for response. I have gone to the Dr who has modified my diet and medication several times. I am doing several small meals throughout the day, which is hard but it seems to help a bit. I just started drinking more water 2 weeks ago. Before that I couldn't even keep it down. I guess that means things are looking up.

Did you have acid reflux the entire 9 months? Did it continue after the birth? That's my concern. Since I've never had it before I'm worried that it won't end after the baby is born.

thanks,

Ana
