Codein and acid reflux.

By Graham Monday, April 04, 2011

About  2  years ago I  began  to feel as  though I  had mucus or something  stuck in my larynx. I developed an annoying habit of clearing my throat (which was never successful). This gradually became worse; culminating in what was almost a cough. This became more and more embarrassing, to the point that I was avoiding social situations. A visit to the  doctor  resulted  in a  post  nasal  drip diagnosis and  a prescription for  Beconase, which   had  limited to  no  effect.

The  clearing, coughing and noises  emanating  from me became louder, more  frequent and  of  course  more  embarrassing, but by  now I  was  experiencing  throat and  chest pain.

My wife and  I  went  on  a caravan  holiday  to  the  South of  France. The  problems  became  so  bad  that I  rang my doctor, spoke  to  a receptionist and pleaded  that he  ring  me  back. Of course he never did! However, I discovered  that the  more  water  I drank,  the  better I  felt. It seemed as though the water diluted the thick   mucus and allowed it to disperse. At last, a  solution, but with it  ensuing   urinary  problems, with loss  of  sleep  at  night  and planning of  all  journeys  to  coincide  with  the  location of  a toilet.

When I  returned  home, I  went to  the  doctor, describing  my  findings and  problems. He sent me to see a specialist at the local hospital. I  described  my  problems and he also  felt that I  had  a post  nasal  drip and   that I possibly  had  an allergy and  should have  tests. These proved to be negative, even though I seemed to be by now, feeling constantly ill. Much  to  my  dismay, a few weeks  later I  received  a letter  from the  specialist discharging me, with the comment  that nothing  was found  and  ergo  nothing  could be  done  to help me. I  felt  abandoned, deserted and felt  that I  was simply  a  moaner, a complainer and  that my  symptoms were minor . I resolved to drink lots and get on with life.

As can be guessed, this plan did not work! I  went  back to the  doctor, who  amazed me  by saying  that  they had  yet  to  try  the  most effective treatment for  post nasal drip  Betamethasone nasal dropsI  was  truly amazed! I  had  been  going  to the doctors, had  been to a  Ear  Nose and  Throat  Specialist  and  neither one  had  mentioned  that  there was  a more effective treatment for  a  runny  nose, which  tracked  down the  back  of  my throat. Guess what, there was some improvement. I  was  happy, but   angry  that it had  to  be  my  doctor  who  had  a solution and  not  the supposed  specialist, who  did, in my opinion, nothing to  help.
