Wednesday, December 05, 2007 at 12:12 PMHi folks,
Page 2 of the "Understanding Acid Reflux" suggests that there may be an association between GERD and Asthma and other respiratory ailments. In some cases, the signs point to GERD being the cause for some of these symptoms. You can read more about it here.
As always, tell your doctor about any symptoms whether you think they are related or not. Only the professionals can diagnose and treat you properly.
Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!!

ALL the same symtoms as you

Friday, December 28, 2007 at 05:22 PMyes...I have every single symtom you described plus my upper back, rib area and neck musles hurt too whenever I'm having a really bad bout. also i'm a singer so the tickling choking coughing is a real bummer!
I can tell you a good nutritionist/kinesiologist, NP or any typwe of holistoic treatments will be as if not more effective and safer than the meds. aloe juice before meals, papaya enzyme chewable after meals, slippery elm capcules and a wide array of natural remedies and enzymes have helped me tremendoudly to cope...along with the guidance of my nutritionist.
Throat Coat Tea, by Traditional Medicinals, Throat Comfort Tea, by Yogi Teas and Thayer's Slippery Elm Lozenges are all available in health food stores and wonderfully soothing for throat irritation and dry cough that accompanys reflux. I also just orderes a really good germ free warm mist humidifier for next to my bed. Hopefully it will help. But in any case it will certianly not hurt to some warm moist clean air to breathe in to combat the hot dry heater air that aggravates the condition! Good luck!

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 02:22 PMMe too and I'm a singer so I am aware of it all. I honestly thought I was dying and my doctor told me, the hospital is swamped with this very thing and people think they are dying. Which leads me to believe it's in every single processed item, therefore peoples food tastes have nothing to do with it , like dairy etc.
I finally went to the doc and said listen, I MUST have lung cancer. you are all missing something. She gave me ran rabeprazole...I haven't even had to use the inhaler, I don't even think I have asthma, just post nasal and Gerd. I feel better, I'm clearing my throat a little bit. But being a singer I don't want to clear it at all...So far I've only taken the pill once a day for four days and my symptoms are almost all gone.
ANd she even said don't expect it work work right away it might take a while. I think this is it folks. And I no longer feel like I'm dying.
So I encourage all to try a Proton Pump inhibitor...that phlegm, while being breathed in is a real killer, or at least feels like it is.
Check it out.
I'll holla back if there's any major changes.
Good Luck

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 02:59 PMhi, yeah it's a bummer...being a singer its even worse, right? I'm always worried i'm going get a flare up just in time for a gig!
anyway i was scared too of the same thing! I keep worrying I have lung cancer or something serious. I finally went to a reg dr (for another issue) but told her i wouldnt take any meds and that i just want to find out what all these symtoms mean and if there could be a connection with a more serious source other than just the reflux. I'm concerned with the rib/back shoulder pain. Now i have a lump on the side of my neck too which is seperate issue i think...I was so scared because of all the neck back and muscle aches and thought it might be Lymphoma or a symtom of lung disease and that the pain is maybe not from the reflux. However she felt the lump and feels it nothing serious. its moveable and painful too which is unusual for any type of cancer. She said it could be fatty tissue or muscle inflamation because i strained my neck 2 weeks before...and the fact that it goes up and down is also a sign that its not that serious. Had a few pea sized nodes too but said everyone has lymph nodes and lumps and bumps they don't even know about and that its not usually anything nor do they even know why people have them. Sometime gum issues, post nasal drip ear etc...I was so worried that all the symtoms i had with the reflux were really something else...but she insisted that if I had a fatal disease i'd have known it or been dead by now, since all these symtoms have occured for years now and on and off. This whole reflux thing can make anyone into a hypocondriac! Because it causes so many overlapping symtoms!
Anyway the good news is my digestive issues seem to be getting better and better with all these enzymes and sticking to a purer diet. Seems all my symtoms including the rib/back thing is becoming less severe and less frequent. Its so hard to believe that all these symtoms are from reflux though. Had some blood work done (dr is a specialist in rheumetology so deals with strange recurring symtoms all the time). Test for thyroid, lupus tendencies, blood count etc. Once they come back we'll go from there. I have no insurance so I'm paying for it all. But the good thing is she wont order unneccesarry tests! She told me to put heat packs on neck and if it doesnt go down in 2 weeks she may have me do an MRI. I refuse to get a tube down my throat due to it affecting my voice and or causing infection...i've heard too many stories about these invasive tests causing all kinds of issues.
anyway hope you are doing well. keep me posted!

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 04:31 PMI did have the tube down twice when I just really needed voice rest.
However only the initial freezing screwed up my voice for a couple of hours WOW, you've never heard a sound like that unless out of a seal.
Well it sounds good what you have going on.
If you ever feel like crap again try someting maybe that is of an organic nature to prevent build up.
I heard certain natural ingredients cause it. Oh too the Europeans swear by hot water and lemon everyday.
Infact thanks for reminding me, going to go do it now.
P.s Coffee is a bad one too. but my god the hours I keep nothing else seems to soothe the soul like that.
Good luck on the career. We probably know all the same fears and tricks. Love
Sher

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 at 04:11 AMOh wow I know the feeling of being a hypocondriac! I have had tons of blood work done, mri, cat scans, ekg's, chiropracter visits, physical therapy and I still had no clue what was making me sick! I have a new doctor and I swear she thinks Im nutts by now. I have never been the sick type and I asked her if it was asthma, depression, migrains, pms, muscle injury, back injury, something! anything! I got that word anxiety............ and I snapped! I told her that I have the sympotoms of it but not until I get behind the wheel of a car (which I eat in for work, and yeah its fast food) with a large coffee. I felt fine in the morning and could breath fine until about an hour into work (and 3 coffees later). I have had neck pain, the base of my skull hurt, my upper back and I was in and out of the ER several times. I went to a sinus specialist for the sinus issues I have and he said go get ocean for nasal spray since I dont take medication. I was talking to the pharmacist and he said all the symptoms I have sound like they are from reflux. I talked to my doctor, she got my file from my retired doctor. I had the same problems 12 years ago with a new born. They did a scope on me back then and said I had a hernia and reflux with a sinus infection. Go figure, the reflux doesnt go away just was under control from the diet I had. So Im taking zantac 150mg a day and I feel a bit better but I still have upper body aches that Im guessing will take a while to go away.

Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 11:52 AMI have been hospitalized 4 times for acid aspirating into lungs, Symptoms are
the same as asthma or bronchitis. I always know when it is bad when I start getting a sore throat. It is the acid coming into throat at night. We recently purchased a bed that inclines so I can sleep in semi sitting position. So far so good.
Last upper gi showed acid as far as sinus cavity when I coughed while lying down. So yes it COULD be the acid reflux. I am on protonix 40mg twice daily with tagamet at bedtime.

that can last weeks to months at a time accompanied by other symtoms such as post nasal drip and the constant throat clearing, congestion, (a couple times I felt the dripping in my chest and cleared my throat tasting blood and when tried to cough a little bright red blood came up) I also have burning in chest (sometimes when when swallowing foods), constant belching (even after a drink of water), discomfort in middle chest, in bronchial tubes, across ribs and even upper back and neck discomfort. I won't take nexium and the flonase my doctor friend gave me. I went to a nutritionist/kineisiologist instead because I have so little faith in conventional medicine especially for these types of issues. As they just perscribe drugs that mask and often time aggravate other symptoms as well. I cannot tolerate any drugs at all and they misdiagnose way too often anyway.
My nutritionist put me on a special diet. I'm taking a bunch of natural enzymes etc with 3 meals a day as well as drinking 2 oz of pure aloe, DGL (licorice) tablets and marshmallow root tinture to promote the healing of my stomach irritation, thraot and esophicial lining. I was 100 % better...ALL symtoms disapearing within a week of her treatment. I continued to feel great with none of the symtoms (except some minor back pain once or twice that were way less severe than when they are with the reflux symtoms) She said my spine is out of alignment too and that aggravates everything as the spine is connected to the digestive and vital organs. Anyway i did everything she advised and for over two months I felt like a new woman! However now this last 2 weeks I'v had another episode with all the symtoms returning together. I never did nor do I understand (especially now since I'm still doing what she recomended) what triggered it.
The cold weather and wind does seem to aggravate my drip and bronchial tubes and also when I strain myself with lifting etc. What worries me the most now again though is when I clear my thoat constanly I coughed up a tiny bit of blood again. It doesn't last after a few times of trying to cough it's gone and i may not get it again for months or when the other symtoms are triggered again. Has this blood thig ever happened to any one else with reflux and do they also have any of these other symtoms too? On top of everything else i'm a singer and i'm nervous about all this damaging or limiting my vocal capacity. As well it ruins my usual happy disposition. I do not smoke and haven't had a cocktail in three months. But at this point a drink might at least help my mood!
