Medicine doesn't work and Surgery didn't work...what now?

By AcidMan Saturday, January 09, 2010

I have had acid refulx since I was at least 12 years old (I'm 38 currently).  Over the years medicine has worked for short periods of time, but never for an extended run and some don't work at all.

2 1/2 years ago I had an endoscopic fundoplication procedure done at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.  Again, there was some short term relief especially when I also took Prilosec but the relief has now completely worn off and my acid reflux is as bad as it was prior to the surgery.

Are there any new procedures, medicines, etc. that might be worth trying?

Hello,

How disappointing for you! So sorry. The GI doctors are on the front lines of new medications and treatments so I would head back to see the GI doctor.  In addition, there are new tests such as impedence testing that may be important. Ask the doctor to evaluate your reflux and let you know of new (or old) treatments that might help you. If you have a history of esophagitis, it is important to be monitored by the doctor any way. My daughter has an endoscopy every 1-2 years post fundo.

I wonder if there is another reason why the symptoms are returning. Food allergies, esinophilic esophagitis and hiatial hernia are reflux look alikes. Other conditions that sometimes have reflux like symptoms: celiac disease, h pylori, food intolerances.

So first determine if the symptoms are all about reflux or not. Then look at the treatment options.

Let us know what you find out.

Jan

I have had a Gerd attack every time I eat a gluten item since my son was diagnosed with a gluten allergy.  We all switched to gluten free as it's much easier to deal with the entire family on the same food plan.  (No cross-contamination)  Best site I know of for info is Living Without magazine which really helps with understanding what's involved and how to find out about gluten allergies.  I subscribed and now understand better what's going on.  Since I found out gluten allergies tend to run in families, I can see similar symptoms to others that have gluten allergy problems.  It usually takes at least 2 decades for gluten allergies to be diagnosed because when they do upper and lower colonoscopys they don't automatically test for celiac disease or gluten reactivity.  Also, not everyone shows up allergic but if symptoms improve or go away on gluten free, it must be gluten allergy ( if it quacks like a duck...).  Hope this helps you.  Edie

I too have suffered with acid reflux since I was 13, I am now 53. I tried every medication known wth no relief. It was so bad I could not even eat without

choking. Until I tried Prolisec, It was a miracle. I no longer suffer from the pain .Now my husband has started using it and he loves itLaughing

There is another procedure available called esophyX. Possibly also known as a TIF procedure. It's not for everyone, but it's another option. Drs. Turgeon and Trad in Reston, VA, have been using this procedure. http://restonhospital.com/CustomPage.asp?guidCustomContentID=C8A33B22-30FD-424A-A2AF-6A20878BCD8C

Wishing you all the best.

I didn’t know how many people suffer from Acid-reflux, I will try to help as many as I can, I’m 59 years old, 3 years ago I was suffering from Acid-reflux, I tried just about all the drugs in the market but, it didn’t help much, and the side effects were terrible, a friend of mine told me about this natural food supplement that he tried, I ordered and tried myself, it was amazing, no side effects, safe for all ages including babies, I didn’t have to go on a diet, I eat and drink anything any time as much as I want, and I mean anything including coffee, sodas. pizza, chocolate spicy foods (my wife is mexican),. I didn’t have to make any lifestyles changes, I don’t have to elevate my head when I sleep and it lasted for more than a year, I had to order it 2 times since for myself and 1 time for my daughter and my son, my daughter was 18 years old and 32 weeks pregnant, my son was 10, the baby is now 13 months old and my daughter and my son had forgotten about Acid-reflux, until two weeks ago my daughter ask me for the web site address  because one of her friends at school have reflux, I have told many of my friend about it, try it and tell your friends too, let me know if it work for you, the web site is betasupplements.com.
