Does drinking milk help or hurt acid reflux

Thanks for writing. Our Prevention section has information about dietary and lifestyle suggestions for people with acid reflux and includes information about milk products. Some people have lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance symptoms may be similar to irritable bowel symptoms.

Drinking milk gives an immediate but very short lived relief to the acid reflux. Once the stomach begins to digest the milk, it produces more acid and actually makes the reflux worse. In this posting, there are some tips and links for ways to deal with acid reflux from lifestyle and diet changes to medicines.
