My son is 4 months old and has acid reflux.  He was originally on Zantac but that didn't seem to help.  He was refusing his bottle and not eating.  His doctor put him on Prevacid.  He will now take a bottle easily.  The problem now is the time in between feedings.  He refluxes every 10 to 15 minutes and just screams.  It is really affecting his quality of life.  Any suggestions?  He has no issues at night while he is sleeping, since we have him sleeping in his car seat.  Thanks for your help!

Try probiotics. Sometimes the digestive system of an infant needs a little help.

Does he have an allergy to milk?

You should really be placing him in his crib to sleep and get him out of the car seat. Try to purchase an incline pillow to ease some pain.

Hello!

I agree with Informed Mom that you and the doctor need to look at his diet. Perhaps his stomach is reacting to the food he is ingesting. Some babies have Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI) but there are other allergies/intolerances too.

Keeping him upright after a meal is important: baby carrier? over the shoulder while you are in a recliner or propped on pillows? The carseat can put pressure on his stomach but some parents do report that it works. There are several wedges with a harness system for sleeping and day time play. On Amazon, I made a Listmania for some of the products that parents tell me really work.

Different bottles or nipples may reduce air intake. Does he make a lot of noise when he drinks? If you are hearing a noisy pattern or he stops and starts often, he might be ingesting a lot of air. Also try to keep him as upright as possible while feeding him to prevent air intake.

Regarding the medication: Make sure you follow the doctors instructions precisely for giving Prevacid.  Let me know if you have any questions in that regard. Also, some babies metabolize Prevacid very quickly so they need a split dose (two smaller doses, twice a day) or a higher dose.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Have you tried the formula Enfamil AR - it's Anti Reflux - it is supposed to thicken in the babies stomach once it hits the stomach acid - it may help

I have a five month old that has had reflux for two months.  He is on zantac and reglan and he has made a 180 flip with the reflux.  He is also on Similac Alimentum which seems to help a ton.  Hope this helps!
