I've had acid reflux for years and have family members with the same. Besides the normal symptoms of burning in your chest and throat especially when you excert yourself, and the hoarseness, I also have a constant feeling of tightness around my throat like I have a noose around my neck. If I talk too much, which I do frequently, it gets worse and actually my jawline will hurt. I went through the medication route to taking up to 2 Nexium a day and found it helped with the reflux but helped very little with the tightening of my neck. The doctor says it's because my muscles are contracting from the acid. I found Nexium and Aciphex to be so expensive so I opt for the otc meds such as Prilosec and Prevacid. They seem to help the reflux as well as the prescriptions and are a lot cheaper. There is a history of gerd in my family, my cousin ended up having surgery, Nissan Fundoplasty(not sure of the spelling). I am not overweight and avoid juices and products that produce a lot of acid. I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced the tightness around your throat that I do. It's can get a little scarey. Thanks for any help.

I have gone through so many test in the last 3 months for this throat, esophagus & layrnx problems. After all the test and medicine{can not list them all} I seem to get some relief after raising the head of my bead.I find that nystatin helps with the throat when it burns.I think there are a lot of us with this.
I also went through many tests, I do have the head of my bed raised the major thing that does not go away with medication and diet change is the tightness in my neck. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My doctor says it is caused by the acid affecting the muscles in my neck. I have been controlling the acid reflux with different meds but can't get rid of the tightness. My cousin also has the same problem but he got tightness in his chest muscles and they thought he was having a heart attack. Has anyone had these problems. Thanks for any help
I took Protonix, which is also an acid-reducer, for three years. I have had muscle spasms, twitches and contractions that would not release for two years. I went to the website of the company that makes the drug and there were people that had reported muscle tightness. It also can cause the inflammation of the muscle sheaths which is called tenosynovitis. I had that too. My stomach condition was not severe enough that I could not get off of the Protonix. I have been off of it for three months and I am so much better. The last place I had the tightness was in my hands and feet. It is not easy to get off of these drugs because they have a rebound effect that causes your body to produce even more acid. I got some Stomach Tonic from Herbs Etc. and some DGL Licorice tablets. I now do not even have to take as many as it recommends. Good luck!
Thanks for the info, I am going to go the Herbs Etc and try the Stomach tonic. I am controlling the acid by alternating with prescription Aciphex and Prilosec. This way I give myself a break from the strong prescriptions side effects. I'm going to check the Nexium and Aciphex side effects to see if they do cause muscle tightening.
hello evil woman.do you still have the feeling of neck tightness. I'm also bothered for a year now because of the same issue. Actually it started after recovering from my LPR. After talking too much, I need to rest my voice. There's a feeling of muscles or veins trying to popped out of my neck, both sides. Please let me know if you already have the remedies for this. Thanks.
