Tightness in my neck

evilwoman Community Member February 01, 2010
  • I've had acid reflux for years and have family members with the same. Besides the normal symptoms of burning in your chest and throat especially when you excert yourself, and the hoarseness, I also have a constant feeling of tightness around my throat like I have a noose around my neck. If I talk too much, which I do frequently, it gets worse and actually my jawline will hurt. I went through the medication route to taking up to  2 Nexium a day and found it helped with the reflux but helped very little with the tightening of my neck. The doctor says it's because my muscles are contracting from the acid. I found Nexium and Aciphex to be so expensive so I opt for the otc meds such as Prilosec and Prevacid. They seem to help the reflux as well as the prescriptions and are a lot cheaper. There is a history of gerd in my family, my cousin ended up having surgery, Nissan Fundoplasty(not sure of the spelling). I am not overweight and avoid juices and products that produce a lot of acid. I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced the tightness around your throat that I do. It's can get a little scarey. Thanks for any help.

I didn’t have to make any lifestyles changes, I don’t have to elevate my head when I sleep and it lasted for more than a year, I had to order it 2 times since for myself and 1 time for my daughter and my son, my daughter was 18 years old and 32 weeks pregnant, my son was 10, the baby is now 13 months old and my daughter and my son had forgotten about Acid-reflux, until two weeks ago my daughter ask me for the web site address  because one of her friends at school have reflux, I have told many of my friend about it, try it and tell your friends too, let me know if it work for you, the web site is betasupplements.com.

Is there anyone else out there that has this throat issue (intense tiredness as if talking too much) but no other symptoms?

I have a tight burning in my neck in several areas, and it hurts to turn my head side to side. The pain feels like a restriction, like a noose, and also like a burning, sick feeling. I am constantly rubbing and grabbing at my neck. My adams apple burns as well and seems swollen. I also have a dull ache on the right side and right under my breastplate that hurts horribly when I twist my torso.

I know my reflux is bad..the other night I woke up with acid fluid coming out of my nose. I have had tests thinking I had tumors, lung cancer, etc. I do have severe sinus infections that cause my eustachian tubes to go haywire. But this burning in my neck is driving me absolutely insane, and I have had severe depression as a result of it. PLEASE if anyone an help....

I do not feel any different and did not have any other symptoms of heartburn/acid reflux. Also, went to an ENT Dr who did allergy testing and said I am allergic to yeast/mold and that could be causing the throat sensations...went on yeast and sugar free diet and am now getting allergy shots...unfortunately do not feel any better. I am 40 and slim build and am not finding any relief...any advice or help would be appreciated. p.s. I had my gallbladder out in Feb 2009 and it has been downhill since then.

My cousin ended up having a Nissan Fundoplasty done and I contiplated having this done but my doctor said it's not a permanent solution. I have seen where they are doing trials for a minimal surgical procedure that has a good outcome. I was told by my doctor to take two of the prescription acid reflux meds a day and they still don't help with the tightness so I only take one a day because I'm not crazy about taking all these meds the rest of my life. I'm hoping that surgical trial is successful, I think I saw it on the Doctors TV show.

It wouldn't start until about 5-10 min after  drank a steamed milk drink, but it happened every time without fail. Even a Chai Latte did it! I can have a cold glass of skim... but no steamed 2% or above.

So now I drink a herbal non-caffeinated tea every morning with my muffin....bye bye mochas (waaahhaaa) ... but no more feeling that something is stuck in my throat...wooohooo!

I think milk (which we don't really need) and coffee (which we also don't really need...believe it or not) are not a great combo for any digestive tract.

Can you tell me if you ever had a follow/up EGD to see if the erosive esophagitis was healed after being on medicine.  It has been since October and I don't feel any better. The family Dr requested the Gastroenterologist do another scope to see, but that Dr says the medicine has to be working and doesn't feel he needs to scope again.  Any thoughts?...

You should have felt much better after the dilation.

The only problem I still have is tightness, like a noose around my neck, especially if I talk too much. That really aggravates it.

Sometimes I take Tagament just to protect my stomach lining and I have control my acid reflux with, prilosec, and other acid reducer and watching my diet, I think it no control on acid reflux, just have to do the best you can to keep it from coming to your esophogus and ruining the lining. Which cause varices or skin lesions on the lining which can become cancerous.  Thanks Cynthia

I took Protonix, which is also an acid-reducer, for three years.  I have had muscle spasms, twitches and contractions that would not release for two years.  I went to the website of the company that makes the drug and there were people that had reported muscle tightness.  It also can cause the inflammation of the muscle sheaths which is called tenosynovitis.  I had that too.  My stomach condition was not severe enough that I could not get off of the Protonix.  I have been off of it for three months and I am so much better.  The last place I had the tightness was in my hands and feet.  It is not easy to get off of these drugs because they have a rebound effect that causes your body to produce even more acid.  I got some Stomach Tonic from Herbs Etc. and some DGL Licorice tablets.  I now do not even have to take as many as it recommends.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I am going to go the Herbs Etc and try the Stomach tonic. I am controlling the acid by alternating with prescription Aciphex and Prilosec. This way I give myself a break from the strong prescriptions side effects. I'm going to check the Nexium and Aciphex side effects to see if they do cause muscle tightening.
