Thank you so much for the interesting post. I agree that the drug manufacturers, doctors and patients/parents all have responsibilities toward making sure a medication is used in the safest way possible.
My refluxers have been prescribed reflux medications for off label uses and I was really nervous about it. I am grateful to my refluxers GI doctor who carefully increased, decreased and changed medications according to symptoms and needs. I know this added greatly to his workload since there were frequent follow up appts and tests to monitor the medications.
The practice of using prescription medications for off label uses is fairly common. Think about all of the babies taking a PPI while the FDA approval is for ages 1 year and up. It is important to have that important conversation with the doctor and evaluate all of the treatment options, including medication.
