Recall of Generic Orally Disintegrating Prevacid

By Stephanie, Health Guide Wednesday, April 20, 2011
On April 15th, the FDA announced a recall of lansoprazole delayed-release orally disintegrating tablets. These are generic Prevacid (Proton Pump Inhibitor). The problem is that the tablets are not fully disintegrating in water and are blocking feeding tubes and syringes. The recall is specifically of...

I've been using Prevacid for about 6 years with absolutely no problems. NOW, the "gov" and FDA says it "might" cause Diarhia?

The damned Gov and FDA give me Diarhia everyday, regardless of Prevacid!!

Put it back on the market!!   thks!

I've been taking it for a long time too, and I have no problem either.  Please please bring it back.

Why has it been taken off the market for those of us taking it orally - not by feeding tube?

THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION?  IT'S LIKE THEY ARE LOOKING FOR A REASON FOR MORE PEOPLE TO SUFFER.  THE LOGIC IS IMMPECCABLE! THAT'S LIKE PROHIBITING SWIMMING BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE ARE DROWNING WHEN THEY ENTER THE WATER. WHEN YOU WAKE UP TOMORROW FEELING DISCOMFORT, WE'LL KNOW WHO TO THANK!!Sealed

The brand name is still available as it was not known to causing problems. They would have to pull it from the market if it was clogging tubes because the dissolvng type was specifically developed and marketed for using with tubes/syringes. Using it in other manners (dissolved in food due to being unable to swallow pills) would be acceptable for a doctor to presribe "off label" meaning in a way not on the original prescribing paperwork.

The problem with this recall is that all stores have removed prevacid from their shelves.  After going to 5 stores I finally asked a pharmacist what is going on?  They were not informed and called around and I waited for 20 minutes.  Why remove all the Prevacid?  I've been on it for 5 years and need it.  I was told to take Prilosac.  I bought it!  I will try it!  I hope everyone who used Prevacid does the same and Prevacid is no longer available.   Enough of the drama.  First it was prescription than it was over the counter and now it's no where to be found.  Good riddance!

This post is about the original recall of Prevacid last year. This only affected the generic version of the disolving tablets.

The only thing I can find is that there is currently a shortage of OTC Prevacid due to production issues. My husband had the same thing happen for him with his prescription Omnaris. The medication was so in demand so quickly that the supply couldn't keep up with the demand. In the long run he had to switch to a different medication.

Good luck everyone!
