My life with acid reflux....or lackthereof.

By mindygallo22 Friday, July 20, 2007

I have had acid reflux since I was a child.  I can remember being around 6 or 7 and having a burning fluid in my mouth that I now know as stomach acid.  It was so bad but my mom didn't know what to do.  She just gave me water.  I am now 22 and it is worse than ever.  I have taken Nexium and Prilosec but both have stopped working after about 2 months.  I can't eat anything at all without worrying because I know the second I eat something, I will get terrible reflux.  I get the burning all in my stomach up to my throat.  I even have food particles that back up in my throat.  It's so bad.  I feel like my quality of life has diminished.  I am so tired of dealing with this.  My husband feels helpless because he knows that whenever or whatever I eat, I will be in pain.  My doctor just tells me there is nothing else they can do for me.  I need to get to a gastro but I know if I go, they will do all kinds of test and my insurance is terrible.  I have a $2000 deductible for surgery and then they will pay 80% of whatever is remaining after I pay $2000.  I can't afford any procedure or anything.  This is so depressing.

Has anyone been pregnant with acid reflux?  If so, what did you do?  I know you can't take any meds or anything except tums.  I have tried that and tums are a joke.  I am not pregnant yet but my husband and I plan to start trying when I am out of nursing school in January 2009.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Acidophilus.  It helped my wife almost immediately. The suggestion came from a lady who claimed her child was very ill and became well after using it.  I am not a expert so try it at your own risk.
