Adults with GERD Need Their Sleep Too!

Jan Gambino Health Guide
  • I often hear about wedges, pillows and positioning devices for babies with gastroesophageal reflux but adults with reflux also struggle to get to sleep or stay asleep. The fact is: sleep and reflux just don’t mix no matter what age you are.

I am always on the lookout for new products and I am happy to report that Horacio Rubio, the inventor of the Comfy LiftBed has several products, including some new options for teens and adults with reflux. I had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Rubio recently and he was kind enough to explain the products that are available from the Positional Therapy Pillow Company. Certainly Mr. Rubio knows a lot about reflux since he lives with reflux every day. He developed his products after struggling to manage his reflux and get a good nights rest.

Jan:  Why is positioning an important part of GERD treatment?

Mr. Rubio: “When someone has GERD, the stomach acid has traveled into the wrong area of our digestive system, the esophagus. Our tender esophagus is not equipped to handle caustic stomach acid causing complications such as burning, discomfort, difficulty passing food and inflammation.  Elevating the sleep surface is one of the quickest and easiest ways to start the therapy process. The Law of Gravity will be your first friend because it will help you keep down what should not come up.

I believe it is important to take charge of my own health, make common sense decisions, and not just rely on marketing ads and influential groups to make decisions for me. The “natural” approach should be first and then invasive methods can be introduced as needed. I found a qualified doctor that would consider my overall health and respect my wishes to first seek a natural solution to my condition, and then, add other treatment options as needed. My condition was so severe that I eventually needed surgery but positional therapy aided my treatment before and after the surgery. “

Jan: What products does your company offer for adults with GERD and Barrett's Esophagus?

Mr. Rubio: “Our original patented pillow the Comfort Lift® Ultimate Adjustable pillow that started it all is often used by teens and adults with moderate to severe GERD. With the Ultimately Adjustable pillow, it is possible to adjust the sleep angle from 30 to 40 degrees, depending on the comfort and needs of the user.

For mild to moderate GERD our new product, the Comfort Lift® Supreme model is a good choice. This product is popular with the elderly. The Supreme pillow has a lower elevation, for those that prefer less of an angle for sleeping. An additional feature is the Comfort Lift Supreme pillow can be used for “side sleeping” since some teens and adults cannot tolerate back sleeping.

The Supreme is very comfortable (I personally sleep on this model) and it is easier to get accustom too, with the lower elevation. I truly enjoy the patented side sleeping support feature so I am able to move about at night from back to sides very easily. By adding a wedge (click on to our Barrett’s Esophagus webpage to find this) to the Supreme model you can achieve more elevation for severe symptoms.”

    Jan:  Are there different sizes?

Mr. Rubio: “Yes, three sizes, small, medium and large in the Ultimate Adjustable model. Two sizes in the Supreme: petite for woman and standard for men. We have a graph on our webpage that helps you choose the Ultimate Adjustable model size you need. So the products can be sized to meet the needs of the individual user.

I would expect a teen could be sized for any one of our adult pillows but you are welcome to call us to discuss the size selection. Another option is to use the adolescent size  Comfy LiftBed for a teen. “

Jan: What is the benefit of using your product?

Mr. Rubio: “The biggest benefit is that you can help alleviate your symptoms in a more natural and non-invasive way. We offer a way to use the Law of Gravity and the benefits of Positional Therapy to accomplish a good part of this therapy with no side effects. I had to change my lifestyle to reduce my symptoms, especially early on but now my situation is greatly improved. “

Jan: Are there other health conditions that benefit from elevating the sleep surface?

Mr. Rubio: “Sleep Apnea (obstructive sleep apnea), snoring, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), thoracic/facial surgery, congestive heart failure, pulmonary/sleep breathing disorders, pregnancy and other sleep breathing conditions will benefit from our patented line of pillows. The Newly Patented SideSleeperDelight™ sleep apnea pillow was specifically designed for those that snore or need side positioning to reduce their apnea episodes. “

Jan: Will my insurance cover the cost?

Mr. Rubio: “When a person has durable medical equipment coverage on his/her health insurance policy, there is a chance they will pay for some or all of the cost of the pillow. You will need to call your health insurance company to find the answer. If they will cover the purchase, generally, they will ask for a “letter of medical necessity” from your doctor stating that he/she believes this is what you need to help your medical condition plus a description of the prescribed pillow product with costs. ”
