Can I Drink Soda If I Have Acid Reflux?

I truly believe I am addicted to soda. If I am away from hope and don't have a soda, (certain kind), for a few hours I get anxious and will go out of my way to find some place I can buy one. Friends who also feel that way have discussed what on earth could be in a diet soda to cause addiction and of course we couldn't come up with anything except the caffene. Do you know of any other reason? Whatever it is, it is sure strong. JoAnne

Hello! I bet the caffeine is a big part of it. I wonder if drinking coffee or soda becomes part of our routine. It wouldn't feel right to skip a part of our routine or change it.

I thought soda was a alkaline. Do you mean soda as soda pop?

I drink water 99% of the time mainly due to allergy intolerance of juice, milk, etc. I do like my Dr. Pepper about once a week. I find the worse part is not being able to unwind late at night when I stop drinking it by 1p.m. Sometimes it bothers me with burping but I have found the worst culprit is tea. I get the reflux all the way up in my throat like sour stomach, so I just don't drink tea anymore. I do take Nexium 1 to 2 times a week, so my GERD isn't bad as long as I eat right.

Hello Ann,

Thank you for your comments. It is interesting that some drinks are ok for one person and not for another. Between the sugar, carbonation and caffeine, soda does cause discomfort for some and comfort for others!

I have reflux real bad. I drink soda all the time. I don’t drink a lot, but that’s what I mostly drink. I used to take nexium. Now I take an over the counter drug for my reflux. I have found if I over eat I suffer real badly. I don’t drink any thing but sugar free soda. I drink very little water. May be I need to drink more water and less cola. What about sugar free cool aid?

I have acid reflux pretty bad and take medication (Prevacid 24 hr) everyday and still cannot drink soda. I get very sick to my stomach and in very bad pain afterwards.  I think it is a combination of the carbonation and the sugars!!

I have recently been diagnosed with acute acid reflux and esophogeal web.  I am a coke and ginger ale addict.  I hate water.  I also hate diet and see no reason to drink it as it just doesn't save that much and is actually worse for you than sugar.  Anyway, many times I did notice problems with drinking sodas.  However, I also had problems drinking water - it made indigestion worse.  Then I developed severe chest and back pains and that is what sent me to the doctor.  He ordered the barium test and that revealed the reflux and webs.  Thank God there were no lesions or cancerous areas.  The Prilosec did away with the pain, I can drink Coke and coffee.  But, my kidney numbers were bad so I DO have to drink a lot more water and at least now I can drink it, when I couldn't  before.

Hello!

My girls can urp and burp on water too-even have a full reflux episode on a glass of water. Soda is a hundred times worse. My girls find that taking small sips of any drink is better than taking giant gulps. Maybe it isn't what is in the glass but how fast the beverage is consumed?

Too bad you cannot tolerate water. I find that I need to drink ice cold water with lots of ice. Otherwise, it is not as appealing to me. I guess everyone is different and needs a different approach to staying hydrated.

Good luck, Jan

I drink what most will say is way too much soda - and I do agree, but that doesn't change my bad habit.  Diet Dr. Pepper is my personal favorite.  Whether or not it has an effect on my GERD (self-diagnosed) I cannot say, because I've been drinking it since long before any GERD symptoms existed.  I have recently discovered that drinking comparable amounts of Pepsi One caused considerably worse pain and burning than Diet Dr. Pepper.  Haven't yet compared ingredient lists to discover why this is.

i suffer from EE, i have bad acid reflux and stomach pains. medicine wont help because it is blocked by the disease itself. i drink soda like 2 cans a day. it never has caused me stomach or acid withdrawel. it kind of has a soothing feeling as it goes down comapared to just water, even though i still drink that. i dont know why all docters say to avoid it becuase it does not affect my serious illness as docters say. gaterade gives me the worst reflux ever

I always regret drinking soda because i know the effects it will have on me.  But all drinks really bother me when I dont take my medicine, even water.  The best drink for me is milk and even that turns on me in the end.i hate acid relfux!

How unfair is that-water and milk cause reflux too.
