    Hi Jan,

Wow, after I read the 1st few sentences, I felt like a the brightest lightbulb just went up in my head. I have a 10 1/2 month old baby, and lately, his reflux seemed to have come back. One gesture that seems to be new is how every once in a while he would touch or rub or caress his head like his head's hurting him or something, it's such a telling gesture on the little baby's part. My husband would ask him gently if his head was hurting him, but of course he's too young to respond to that. Is it really possible for a baby his age to get a headache? I have not discussed this new gesture with his ped yet. The last time when I told the ped that my baby throws up easily, he was little dismissive and said that as long as the baby wasn't throwing up at every feed, that was about 5 weeks ago. But for the past few days, he had been throwing at least once a day, triggered by self-gagging or gag by a little piece of solid food. The baby just throws up really easily.

Hello! You are asking a very interesting question. Remember, I am a mom and not a doctor!  I am not familiar with a baby under the age of 1 year having a headache. However, I am sure he is rubbing his head for a reason. My children used to tug at their ears and most of the time, it was an ear infection.  So I am not doubting that he is feeling something that bothers him.

Does  his face grimace or does he stop playing suddenly to rub his head or does he just do it casually? I would definitely mention to the doctor and bring some hard data. Observe him for a day or two and write down how often he rubs his head and what he was doing at the time (eat, play, etc).

I am more familiar with vomiting issues. While most babies outgrow the vomiting associated with reflux during the first year, some babies continue to vomit during the first year. When the vomiting goes away and comes back it can be discouraging. It may be a sign that the reflux never really went away. It just became quieter for a while. Also, some babies tend to stress their lower esophageal sphincter from movement  and activity.

Again, I would track this and bring some data to the doctor. how often, how much, after a meal? first thing in the am?

Some medications, including the reflux medications are associated with headaches. The class of drugs called PPI's (Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec) are sometimes associated with headaches. Not sure if your son is on GERD meds or other meds.

Please let me know what you think about my comments and let me know if your son is on any medications.

I also want to know what you find out from the doctor.

    Please keep in touch!
