By Jan Gambino, Health Guide Friday, September 12, 2008
Dear Reflux Mom, I heard that Erythromycin was discontinued. I am so worried because my baby and preschooler take this medication every day for delayed gastric emptying and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and it really helps them. Now what?   Concerned Mom   Dear Concerned Mom, &nb...

Hi! I just came from the pharmacy to pick up a refill of erythromycin. I was, also, told that it is no longer manufactured. I just did a google search and found you. I also came across an FDA report that showed which forms (by manufacturer) were being discontinued. Looks like the only oral form is a timed release capsule.  That doesn't do our little ones much good.  This med was like a miracle drug for my little one's reflux.  I hate to see what's going to happen when we run out.........which will be in a couple of days.  What are we going to do!?!

Hello!

Thanks for the alert on the Erythromycin. I called one of the manufacturers in the fall and they said other forms (equivalent to the discontinued formulation) would be available.

It might be best for you to call the manufacturer (Abbott, Ross, etc) and ask them what the equivalent is. Your pharmacist or the doctor might know too.

While some medications are discontinued because of safety issues, my understanding of erythromycin is that is isn't a top seller and it is being cut back in respond to demand.

Let me know what you find out.

Your message is the second one on this site about erythromycin this week. I am sure others will benefit from your research.

I just called almost every pharmacy in my city, trying to find Erythromycin base tabs. Everyone had them, except they were priced any where from $69 to $198. The highest being Walmart. I take this drug for motility. It is a vital drug for me. Being disabled, taking the amount of drugs I take, and falling in the donut hole before the year ends, I simply can not afford another increase in my drugs. Is there not something that someone can do for those of us which can not afford medication that is needed. We dont' qualify for any assistance at all, and as anyone living on disability knows, there is just never enough corners to cut to get what is absolutely needed to live comfortably.
