My Inauguration Story

Did you see me on the mall on inauguration day?! I was the one waving the American flag and cheering wildly...I got up well before dawn and used up all of my “Parking Karma” to find the last parking space on the edge of Capitol Hill. Then I gathered my girls and our friends to join the sea of people walking to the mall. We arrived just as the sun was coming up over the Capitol building. What a beautiful sight!

As the parent of two children with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and asthma, I listened to President Obama’s inauguration speech with great interest. During the campaign and during the speech, he made frequent references to the high cost of medical care and the need to help those in need of affordable health care. While there were no specific programs or plans presented, I have a great deal of faith that his administration will address the health care needs of all Americans. His promise of change gives me hope but the fact that he is the parent of two little girls makes me sure he will help those in need. As a parent of young children, he sees the world differently. He knows how important it is to have access to good medical and dental care, to eat healthy food and have access to exercise and fresh air to breathe as he hugs his precious daughters every day. I know he will make the right decisions as a parent, to improve health care for all Americans.

The day was exciting and inspiring for all of us. We met many wonderful people from around the country and around the world. Our sleeping bag outerwear was the envy of many and we were photographed by many visitors and professional photographers including the New York Daily News and People Magazine! Best of all, we were all filled with hope that the dawn of a new day in Washington DC had brought change to us and to our world.
