Reglan: New Warnings from the FDA

The FDA has issued a new warning about the use of Reglan or Metaclopramide, a medication that may be used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and related conditions. There has been ongoing concern about the side effects of Reglan. Some children and adults experience Tardive Dyskinesia inc...

When I took Reglan, I would fall asleep anywhere and had difficulty concentrating.  I spoke with a co-worker about having GERD and discovered that we were both on the same medicines.  We started comparing symptons after taking Reglan and decided to stop the medication on our own.  I had been taking Reglan (4 pills a day) for about 6 months.

I've taken Reglan for Gastroparesis starting in July 2007 until this year. It has worked wonders for me and has kept me out of the emergency room. I take 5mg 4 times a day. I havent had any adverse side effects at all. I stopped taking it at the begining of this year as a test. The doc wants me to come in for re-evaluation to renew my latest script, I dont want to pay the "specialist" copay so I decided to see how I do without it. I stopped "cold turkey" without "weening" myself off and was fine, no issues. I've been eating tons of greens and fiber foods to compensate for the pills, staying away from fatty greasy foods. I still eat 3 times a day, not 6. I have taken maybe 4 pills this whole year due to the fact I wasnt eating a good meal that day and didnt want to have an episode of vomitting. After reading this warning though, which is scary to me - to have unwanted movements and it may never be fixed - I dont think I will be taking anymore even though it hasnt caused me any problems in the past.

Hello!

Thank you for sharing your story. It is great that the Reglan helped you through a difficult period with your Gastroparesis and you did not experience worrisome side effects. I am sure there are many others with similar stories.

My young daughter was given a dose of Reglan for nausea in the recovery room at Johns Hopkins after surgery about 7 or 8 years ago. She quickly began moving her limbs involuntarily and could not stop them. At the time the doctors had no idea what was going on and tried all types of drugs to counteract the movements with no success.  The involuntary movements lasted about 18 hours and then luckily stopped.  The doctors told us not to allow her to be given Reglan again, but at the time didn't understand why this had occurred. They thought it might have been a reaction with one of her other meds, but they had not seen this before. This was a scary incident when some of the top doctors in the world had no answers. It's interesting that now, many years later, there is more evidence of Reglan causing this same response in other people.

I thank you all for the information, this realy helps a lot.

We do not want to cure one problem and start another.

My daughter at the age of 6mths was given Reglan for her reflux and was on it for several months. It helped a little but she did develop a very scary seizure like disorder and I could not even hold her. She would have to be fed in her swing while screaming and postering her arms and stiffening her body. We had an EEG done thinking possible siezures but it was normal we were instead told by the Neurologist that she may have had some sort of Benign something, don't remember the word, that would go away on its own in time. Not one time did anyone say anything about the Reglan being an issue. I feel like I missed out on so much with her, not ever being able to hold her to feed her and am very angry to find out that it may have been caused by the Reglan. Glad to say that she is happy and healthy now showing no signs of any long lasting effects thank god!!

My son is 8 months old and has been in the hospital his whole life and they have given him reglan for his whole life.  They could not fine out a reason to why he was vomiting and so they sent him home telling me that this will just be something that I will have to deal with.  I had to bring him back into the hospital 6 days later due to dehydration from vomiting and diarriah.  The doctors at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC tell me that all of his tests are negitive and don't know what it is and send him home 4 days later.  We are back into the hospital 5 days later for the same thing, vomiting and diarriah and dehydration.  All of our tests come back negitive again and on January 5, 2010 I saw a comercial on TV for side effects of reglan are deadly.  I asked them for paperwork on this med and the rest of his meds and they pretty much told me when they get to it I will get it.  I got upset and told them that when they get me the paperwork then we can talk about giving my son any more meds.  I refused to give him any more meds due to not knowing if these simptoms were side effects or not.  The very next day after taking him off of the meds he DIDN'T vomit.  Looks like I found out why.  The hospital called CPS on me because I didn't want him having it and I wanted them to find an alternative drug to give him but they refused.  They finally gave me info on the meds after they called child protective services.  I don't understand how they can dictate that this one med will work for every child and not even allow a different of opinion.  Yesterday the hospital refused to take care of him and discharged us after we had to talk to CPS.  They said that it was medical neglect.  I think they were trying to kill him what do you call that?  E-mail me if you have been in this situation.  tabbitha_anne@yahoo.com

Hello,

So sorry to hear your story. How scary. It is important to know the common and uncommon side effects of any medication your child is taking. My children were not able to tolerate Reglan either so I stopped giving it to them pretty fast. On the other hand, parents have told me it worked well for their child. Every child is different.

I will email you privately about being reported to Child Protective Services.

My nephew is almost 12 years old and suffers from involuntary movements.  Several years ago, they were diagnosed as a mild form of Tourette Syndrome...ranging from rapid blinking to looking up (rolling eyes back) to the current 'tick' which is kicking his foot up toward his buttocks and reaching down to that foot to touch the heel, every few steps, both sides.  It's as if he's checking to make sure his feet are still there.  At any rate, he was given Reglan for several months as as infant....to rule out Pyloric Stenosis...the doctor said if Reglan work, it was just GERD and not PS...therefore no surgery would be necessary.  Is it possible that this 'ticks' he has been diagnosed with since age 5 or so could be due to Reglan use?

Hello!

It is my understanding that Reglan *may* cause involuntary movements and neurological problems in some infants, children and adults. This condition is also called tardive dyskinesia. I am not aware of Reglan causing Tourette. Often the neurological side effects from Reglan are seen in those on a high dose and taking the medication long term. That is why the FDA now has the Black Box warning so doctors and medical consumers are aware of the need to take the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time to treat the symptoms.

There are similarities in the movements seen in a Tourettes and in the tardive dyskinesia. Certainly mention your concern to the neurologist or doctor treating the Tourettes for clarification.

Good luck,

Jan

My daughter is 17 and took Reglan as an infant.  She had GERD very bad.  Her acid was 26 times the normal amount.  Reglan seemed to have helped her. I was never informed of these side effects with this drug.  But she has told me for years that she feels like she has restless leg syndrome.  Her feet/toes twitch alot.  If we are sitting on the couch watching t.v. she will ask me to sit on her feet to keep them still.  I have occasionally put my hand on her and felt her body twitching.  Could this be a side effect to this drug?

Yes to you, and yes to the individual above. My now 12 year old little brother has had phonic tics since very young, and has been on clonidine. The doctor decided to switch him to Reglan (to treat TICS!) a couple years back; luckily my mother emailed me to run it by me before she ever filled the prescription. I nearly flipped out - first of all, Reglan is BANNED for children under 12 in Europe because it causes Tardive Dyskinesia - a more severe issue with involuntary movements than my brother already had, and it's usually permanent! I was totally thrown off because of the very serious side effects. These are young children we're talking about!

You and the person above who has the young son probably both qualify for an ongoing lawsuit out of Georgia againt the makers of Reglan. You need to contact the lawfirms immediately (so some Google searches for Reglan lawsuits) - your children might be owed money.

Very sorry this happened to both of you guys!
