Flying with your refluxers (kids with reflux) this summer? Me too. I am planning ahead so the kids can keep to their eating routines and stay away from reflux trigger foods as much as possible.   In a way, it is probably a positive change that the airlines have stopped serving meals on most ...

As usual, your posts are always relative to what seems to be going on in our life.

We are preparing to fly in August for a 12 day trip to Children's Hospital in Boston for our oldest son, Noah.  This is the longest trip my husband and child will have ever taken and for me 2 days short of the longest trip I've ever taken.

As I was making arrangements just this morning for the hotel room and then the flight, I got your post.

With Noah, he's tube fed.  So, we always have formula and it takes us a little longer to go through security.  We will talk to the special needs coordinator because when you have a disability, you're able to carry on any medical supplies, medicines, and equipment you might need.  Due to the large chance of luggage being lost, we will NOT check any of Noah's formula, CPAP machine, new adaptive stroller (that we'll need to get through the airport) or any of his medicines.  His medical equipment for 12 days will be more than one person would pack for 12 days including clothing!

The cost for a trip so long and so far away is really high.  Basically, before we eat or do anything for "fun" we've already spent $2,000 just to get there and have a place to sleep.  This is not including food for us.

Thank you for the tip on the food.  We'll definitely pack a few snacks, as Noah is very limited as to what he can eat, like most reflux kids.  We'll also wait until we arrive and get settled and we will make a trip to the nearby Target that's two blocks away and stock up on diapers, water for his CPAP, extra food and drink, wipes, and any other disposables such as laudry detergent, dish washing detergent (to wash his syringes for the medicines).

We hope your trip is pleasurable and thank you again for always giving that extra little tip to help others!

    Oh Brandi,

How ironic that your "vacation" will be the Children's Hospital in Boston. I hope you find the answers you are seeking from the specialists there. Maybe you will have a moment to sneak off and ride the Swan Boats in the Public Garden or get an italian pastry in the North End. The way I look at it, you can make memories wherever you are. When my daughter had to spend so much time in the hospital, we made games and had our own fun. When she was an overnight patient for a pH probe test, the nurse taking vitals woke her up at 5am. What now I thought?! Next thing you knew, she was riding the Big Wheels down a hallway far from the patient rooms, laughing and happy. It was funny to see the looks on the residents faces as they went from groggy to alert as a preschooler shot past them!

I have not heard of other recent air travelers having hassles with getting medication or medical foods through security. I am with you 100% on taking everything on board. it could be a nightmare if the vital items arrived late or took a trip to the wrong airport.

Hugs to you and Noah as you make your journey!
