AAP Update: Despite the cold and the rain in Washington DC, the convention center was busy before the 7am session. The first session was a real eye opener too. The new guidelines for introducing solids to babies has changed greatly. Now it is recommended that nutrient rich food such as meats, vegetables and fruits should be introduced first  rather than the traditional rice cereal that has been favored. I am sure you have plenty of questions and concerns about this topic. Believe me, it kept me alert and focused too! I will write an entire Sharepost on this topic at a later point.

I found some great new products in the exhibit area too. I know how important it is to find just the right product to help you take care of your baby and save you at least a bit of time and worry during your long days and nights. More to come!

The session on childhood obesity was sobering. It is such a common condition with many health consequences, including Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. The Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Koh spoke at a  session and stated that First Lady Michelle Obama has made fighting childhood obesity a top priority.

Check back tomorrow for another update.

After spending 11 hours at the conference yesterday I was too tired to think. Today I was full of energy and ready to attended a session on the research related to infant formulas. I will give you the full story later but the take home message: there are too many choices and the medical benefits/claims are not well supported by research.

I have to tell you about some of the interesting products that I found at the exhibit hall:

Zaky Pillow and Zak's Sack for positioning a premature baby: www.zakeez.com

BabyDdrips: vitamin D drops for breastfed babies: www.drops.ca

    Snuggin Go Infant Positioner: www.snuggingo.com

    NapNanny infant seat www.napnanny.com

I will feature these and some new products in my next Sharepost.

I will be back tomorrow with information about autism and GI issues.

The discussion of GI issues and autism was very interesting. There is a great deal of research looking at digestive issues and autism which is really good news. The array of treatments for autism is very confusing and there is so much conflicting information.

There is still a need for large scale studies to determine how common digestive issues are in children with autism. Are children with autism at greater risk for developing digestive issues? Or do children with autism have reflux, celiac disease and other digestive conditions at the same rate as typically developing children.

It is anticipated that treatment guidelines for children with autism will be released in a few months. You know that I will be telling you all about it!
